This is a very interesting site managed by a young woman who takes trips into Chernobyl on her motorcycle and brings back photographic evidence of her rides. The story she tells along the way is pretty interesting as well.

They did something similar to this a while back (10 years or so ago IIRC) with some guy bicycling through that area. It was kinda creepy to see the ghost towns there.

He had a Geiger Counter (sp) there and everything and it still was reading radioactivity.

It truly leaves you with an odd feeling looking at those pictures. Especially the ones where it is obvious that people had to up and run from their homes leaving pictures and mementos in place.

Yep those pictures are the ones that got to me too. There are some pretty good preserved furnished homes there with furniture still inside.

I'll have to find the ones that are really close to Chernobyl where they went in with radioactive suits and took pictures. It is surreal.

A disappointing thing though is when people put down nuclear energy and use Chernobyl as an excuse. So much has changed in the nuclear reactor world since there and many redundancies are now in place to prevent such a disaster.

Chernobyl was a prime example of technology getting ahead of how to use it safely though.

Another fine success of Russian communism!

This is the famous ferris wheel in Pripyat that you see in almost every picture about Chernobyl. It's still there. Kind of spooky.
