I want to note that although some people might think, Spanish citiziens were already afraid because some of the errors made by the previous President of Spain, Aznar, like Prestige, "Decretazo" (which was a measure to improve employement... for the business), and also which hapened 11/3 in Madrid and the days after. They said things that weren't true, and even the PP candidate Rajoy was shown in a press-conference the day before elections - illegal in Spain -.
So you should understand that under that situation (trying to hide the truth to win the elections), most of Spanish were to vote (highest participation in the Democray) and as long as Spanish is more socialist than capitalist (political talking, not only economical), zapatero won.
