View Full Version : TEXAS: Nugent Shows True Colors At Gov Ball
AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry to rocker Ted Nugent: "Give 'em hell."
Nugent insisted Monday that the governor loved his inaugural ball performance last week and never criticized his decision to wear a shirt emblazoned with the Confederate battle flag.
Speaking by phone Monday, Nugent said Perry approached him backstage after the Jan. 16 event, complimented him on "the greatest rock 'n' roll" and thanked him for coming.
The governor followed that up with a weekend telephone call that ended with Perry telling Nugent to "give 'em hell," the rocker said.
Nugent, who disputed news accounts that he made disparaging remarks about immigrants during his inaugural appearance, said he often wears his battle flag shirt on stage during concerts.
"It's cute," he said. "It's a rebel flag and I'm a rebel."
Nugent said he and Perry discussed the Confederate flag in their weekend phone conversation, when the governor called and reminded him that the flag flies proudly over Laredo International Airport.
Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said the Confederate flag at the Laredo airport is likely not the battle flag but the Confederacy's first national flag, a less-recognized banner common in displays of Texas' six flags. It flies on the grounds of the Capitol in Austin, he pointed out.
Perry's decision to invite Nugent turned what might have been a simple Austin celebration into a national news item. Nugent's appearance in rebel attire, with machine guns for props, came just hours after Perry delivered an inaugural speech noted for its moderate, conciliatory tone.
Perry's chief spokesman, Robert Black, confirmed that the two spoke over the weekend and said he had no reason to dispute Nugent's statement that the governor congratulated Nugent on his performance.
"The governor is very good friends with Ted Nugent," Black said.
Black said that while Perry wouldn't have advocated Nugent's choice of attire, he defended the appearance on freedom of expression grounds.
When asked if Perry, who won re-election to his second full term with 39 percent of the vote, would have invited Nugent had he known what he would wear, Black responded, "Yes."
"If you're going to defend freedom of expression, then you're going to have to defend all freedom of expression," Black said.

Don't do as I say, just watch what I condone. So much for a "moderate, conciliatory tone." Wear a shirt with a racially-charged symbol on it to an Inaugural Ball in a Deep South state. Throw in an alleged anti-immigrant tirade. Sit back and watch the governor's chief spokesman spin this into a freedom of speech issue and what do you have?

Throw in an alleged anti-immigrant tirade.
I don't know about the rest of this story, but from what I am hearing that he said it was anti illegal alien commentary, NOT anti immigrant.
immigrant does NOT equate to illegal alien, nor does someone wearing a confederate flag make them a racist.

And he's an obvious racist.
Because he wore a confederate flag?

Or, you could just check your facts...
"Apartheid isn't that cut and dry. All men are not created equal. The
preponderance of South Africa is a different breed of man. I mean that with
no disrespect. I say that with great respect. I love them because I'm one of
them. They are still people of the earth, but they are different. They still
put bones in their noses, they still walk around naked, they wipe their
butts with their hands ? These are different people. You give 'em
toothpaste, they fucking eat it ... I hope they don't become civilized.
They're way ahead of the game."
and
"I'm a fun guy, not a sexist or a racist?. I use the word n***er a lot
because I hang around with a lot of n***ers ?."
Sure, Ted's a stand-up guy.

This may be the case but the argument was based on Ted's actions at the event in question. :D
But my comment was based on the person of Ted Nugent. His wearing a confederate flag shirt to a GOP function is just icing on the racist cake. Spouting off about illegal aliens PLUS wearing the shirt all adds up to the same thing when you are talking about The Motor City Madman: racism. I can only imagine the howls if Nugent would have done exactly the same thing at Elliot Spitzer's (D-NY) Inaugural ball. This thread would be 17 pages long and every neocon on the board would have sat on this thread waiting for a Liberal or Democrat to defend him.
Yeah, Nugent has the right to free speech. We also have the right to call him a racist if the shoe fits.

Anger over those entering the country illegally is pretty commonplace these days ECW. I will grant you that Ted has made his bed and must lay in it himself, but wearing a shirt like that and decrying illegal aliens is not racism. He may be a racist based on other postings of his attitudes and commentary that I have seen in this thread, but the shirt and commentary about illegal aliens doesn't warrant that tag on their own.
To settle this we would have to hear EXACTLY what he said which, unfortunately, isn't possible. I'll stand on my assertion that Nug is a racist because, to me, this is just icing on a cake already baked. In and of itself, this may not be enough to damn him but added to what I already knew about him and what others have added to this, I'd run with this case to the grand jury.
On edit, I will add, I am not happy about the illegal alien problem either, but spouting off at a gubernatorial ball isn't productive or an intelligent way to deal with the problem. Why did he do it? The arrogance of his position as a rock star (?) and that he is friends with the Gov.
I can express my dissatisfaction about the problem at an appropriate time and place and I don't think a ball is either.

Granted. Celebrity must be pretty liberating as they seem to feel, both left AND right, that it grants them a forum at any time they wish.

Sorry bout that,
1. But Ted Nugent is cool.
2. He wants to protect the freakin border thou.
3. I agree.
4. In no other country are the borders so porous.
5. Like I said months ago, we need a 30 tall wall like that one in China.
6. With a mote between a second wall.
7. With alligators, in the mote that's 30' across.
8. Unless we do this, we might as well change our countries name to *New New Mexico*.

Sorry bout that,
1. But the common tactic of the Neo-Libs is to label everyone else a bad guy.
2. Its what they do.
3. Even thou when you take a look at the real reality.
4. Neo-Libs have the most to cover up.
5. And a list of the really bad folks in the Neo-Libs Party is extensive.
6. How does a wise man gage a bad person in American Politics?
7. A bad person in American Politics are thus.
8. A person or group of persons who betray the American Trust by being self serving and or dishonest about ones motivations for political gains and or financial gains.
9. There are far more bad politicians in the Neo-Libs Party than there are in the Republican Party.
10. And there are bad politicians in the Republican Party, which is no surprise, people are people, for one reason or another some politicians feel they can get above the law.

9. There are far more bad politicians in the Neo-Libs Party than there are in the Republican Party.
There are far more jailbirds and sexual predators in the Republican Party than there are in the Democratic Party. (I'm not sure of who you mean by the "Neo-Libs party.") More racists, too.

<enormous grin>
I got the proof for the jailbirds and sexual predators. Working on proof for the racists.

Sorry bout that,
1. But my stuff is fact based.
2. What was that old farts name?
3. Thurman?
4. Is an active member of the KKK, and oldest fart in congress???
5. The Neo-Lib Media is constantly trying to mold all Republicans as a bad guy.
6. So that's a fact.
6.a) Okay now.
7. And in my expert opinion there are far more bad guys and gals in the Neo-Lib Party, also many Rino's amongst the Republican Party, we get saddled with.
8. Its worse than you think, Rino's are chucked full in the Republican Party.
9. Otherwise we would be seeing more real action taken against the Neo-Lib Party, they would be putting folks on trial, people like Berger, N.O. Congressman, Hillary and Bills White Water, Obama's illegal house deal, Harry Reid's land scam, and many others.
