Font: * * * * BAGHDAD -- The official video of the hangings Monday of Saddam Hussein's co-defendants showed the late dictator's half-brother lying headless below the gallows, his severed head several metres away.

The video, although not released publicly, was screened for reporters. It showed Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half-brother and former intelligence chief, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, being hanged side by side.

After the trap doors opened, al-Bandar could be seen dangling from the rope. Ibrahim's body was lying on the floor, chest down, his severed head meters away.

The execution was conducted on the same gallows where Saddam was hanged Dec. 30.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the gallows were built to international standards and in accordance with human rights organizations.

"We will not release the video but we want to show the truth," he said. "The Iraqi government acted in a neutral way."

Prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi said Ibrahim looked tense when he was brought into the room and said: "I did not do anything. It was all the work of Fadel al-Barrak."

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq hanged two aides to Saddam Hussein before dawn on Monday but government efforts to avoid a repeat of uproar over the ousted leader's rowdy execution were thwarted when his half-brother's head was severed by the noose.

Many of the government's Shi'ite Muslim supporters rejoiced at the death of Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, Saddam's once feared intelligence chief who was accused of sending people to death in a meat grinder. But voices in Iraq's Sunni Arab minority saw the decapitation as a deliberate sectarian act of revenge.

Government spokesmen said the severing of Barzan's head was a rare hangman's blunder. Critics said it may have been partly a result of Barzan's illness with cancer.

Officials showed journalists film of Barzan and former judge Awad Hamed al-Bander standing side by side in orange jumpsuits on the scaffold, appearing pale and trembling with fear as the hangmen placed black hoods over their heads.

As the two trap doors swung open, the force of the rope jerked Bander's head off. The head fell to the floor next to his body in a pool of blood as Bander's corpse swung above it.

The officials said they had decided not to distribute any part of the film to the public -- unlike footage shown of Saddam standing on the gallows.

The U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, told reporters the hanging of the two men was "an Iraqi decision, an Iraqi execution". But some countries in the European Union, to which Iraq is looking for economic aid, expressed disgust. The United Nations had appealed for mercy. Continued...

5. No
6. No

I think after having the crowd at Sadaam's hanging chanting out the name of the man who's main purpose is to kill our army should have infuriated Americans. Instead the shabby and completely inept way they hanged him inflamed almost every country that saw it. (Bush even admitted he was ashamed) Add this on to it and don't be surprised when you hear out rage.

6. Did his throwing others into a wood chipper make this alright?
Yes, not very smart though.
