There will be two rounds. The first round will pit Libertarians against conservatives and liberals against independents (so there's the biggest difference in the final round). The winner of those two rounds will then compete against each other.

The debaters in each group will be asked two questions (the 3rd and 4th most popular respectively), libertarians vs. conservatives get asked the same question as liberals vs. independents, each with 4 responses each. Who answers the first question first will be determined by alphabetical order, and then the other person will answer first on the second question. So it will look like this:

Question 1:
A
B
A
B
A
B
A
B
Finished

Question 2:
B
A
B
A
B
A
B
A
Finished

Each person has 48 hours to make a response and, if they don't, they forfeit their turn. Hopefully it won't take nearly that long.

After the debate, there will be 48 hours for people to vote on the winner of each. All members of the forum can vote on the winner of any of the debates, and the vote will be private. In the case of a tie the period would be extended until the tie is broken (a mod will close the poll as soon as they notice the tie is broken).

Then the second round would include the winner of each, with the top two questions. The same process would be repeated, except a tie break question (5th most popular) would be used if there's a tie in the vote, with each person getting 1 response to state their position on it. If there's still a tie then the 6th most popular question will be asked.

The voting results for questions are as follows:

1. What is the best way to solve the current problems in our healthcare system? Would a majority of Americans benefit more from nationalized healthcare or from deregulating healthcare?
2. What should the U.S. role be internationally? (Intervention vs. Protectionism)
3. Should the constitution always be followed to the letter or should we make exceptions under certain conditions?
4. What does "success" look like in Afghanistan? How long should we be there? How much of our money should go toward rebuilding it, versus getting the Taliban out?
5. Should there a right to die with dignity? Why or why not?
6. Are Unions good or bad for America?

The debates begin tomorrow, 5/28.

Edit: Round one of the election debate has finished and Lance and Northeastcynic have been voted the winners. Round two will begin shortly.

Second question then a vote on the winner.

Lance gets first shot with the following:

Do I understand the debate rules to indicate that a response must be posted within 48 hours of the opponents last post? If the response has not been posted within that 48 hours the poster forfeits the debate? Is this accurate? If so, it would seem that professor has 1hr 13min to post or the debate goes to NE?

Yup, she just barely got it in on time. :DHey, another question. If I know well in advance that I will not meet the deadline for the debate response and both sides agree to take a time out for real life reasons that cannot be avoided is this doable? I have to fly out of O'Hare for an interview tomorrow night and will not be back until late Thursday night. I will not have my computer and would hate to try to enter a response from my Blackberry. Thoughts?

I'd say yes, provided it's reasonable. You guys are on pace to finish well ahead of the other group.

I must have misunderstood this part. I thought each debate was going to be voted on........so it's the total debate on all the questions and not just each one, and the numbers added up?

Alonzo

Yes. If we had a poll on each one then we'd need three questions.

I got my response in on time. I do not see any need to speed up my response as Lance and I are flying along and the answers will not be ported before our counterparts. I would suggest some time after the current debate to allow us on a more even keel time wise speaking.

Lance and I have made an agreement, he is going to take a trip, our debate will continue after his return, if that is fine with the mods.

I would like to propose that the conservative/libertarian threads be locked and proceed to voting whenever the mods deem necessary. I don't think that michaelr and I are going to find much to disagree on. Don't wanna sound like a couple of parrots nagging at each other. :)
