A tsunami warning was issued Saturday for Japan and a broad area surrounding the Pacific Ocean, including Alaska, after a major undersea earthquake east of the Kuril Islands, according to two warning centers. The earthquake was measured at a massive 8.2 magnitude. An official in Japan said instruments measured a 8-inch drop in the tidal level, suggesting a surge could be on the way.
