According to a resolution passed by the city council today, the City of Coachella will become a safe haven for immigrants, both legal and otherwise. This at a time when the Senate is preparing to vote on a proposition that would make undocumented immigrants into felons and would make it possible for people with legal status to become criminals.
Coachella Mayor Jesse Villarreal got up and walked out of the meeting when the Safe Haven resolution went to a vote. His absence gave two votes to the majority, passing the resolution, which gives peace of mind to residents.
"What it means is that our local police will not be an extension of the border patrol, that our people in the community will sleep in peace."
HR4437 is a bill making its way through Congress that would make undocumented immigrants felons and legal immigrants criminals if they helped undocumented immigrants.
The City Council of Coachella approved Safe Haven, which would allow residents and illegal immigrants feel secure and comfortable here in the Valley.
Today, local residents we spoke to were appalled at the law being considered by Congress and don't like the assumptions it makes of immigrants.
"It's going to be a tragedy because it's racial profiling and aimed at Latinos and so I think the city council did something to really support the population that lives here. I think it was a great move. They should be congratulated.
I don't think that's right. They come here and they're the ones that work. That's the reason there's groceries, there's everything because they work.
The resolution is about the safety of Coachella residents. By not allowing this law to be followed by the city, people will not be in fear of law enforcement and immigrants will have a sanctuary.
