I have read recently in the news, that America is the only superpower, and has been for quite a while, but from what I have heard she is dieing. Currently there is only one superpower: the United States. It is considered a hyperpower in a unipolar world. There are also three accepted emerging superpowers: the European Union, China, and India. These are currently considered major powers.

What do you think will happen if the EU, China, and India become superpowers?

My prediction is that within 50 years a war between China and India will happen. One country has 1.1 billion people and the other has 1.3 billion. Imagine that! One third of the worlds population is right there. It doesn't take a genious to figure out that a war can break out there.

The EU will never be a superpower. Never.

The demographics speak against it. They have an aging population, a negative birth rate, taxes are too high, promised social services are too much, the population gains they do have are from non-European immigrants who are not moving into wage earning positions but rather social dependency. They have badly disjointed senses of unity with a "rotating Presidency" in and out of the EU, too many vestiges of national pride and dual masters in national and EU matters. Last but not least none of the powerful "western" nations have vibrant growing economies that are outstripping the rate of inflation.

The hope for the EU is in the east and in a hope that the new democracies don't make the same disasterous social contracts with their populations. However the French, British and Germans treat their new partners with almost as much contempt as dyed in the wool liberals show for red staters.

None of those things are going to result in a EU superpower.

Good post PAD. I can't disagree with any of it. Personally it's China that has to be considered a new superpower. If we give them 5-10 years things will be very clear on that regard. However I think they will be more of a partner to us than Russia ever was. I fear the Middle East the most as far as a super power emerging and I think that's why we are in Iraq now. The U.S. cannot afford to have a powerful nation in the Mid-East.

Oil is currently the currency which a nation buys it's strength with. We buy our strength and now China will be as well. bah...

I challenge you all to find 5 things made in the US. Everything is made in China now.

Just looking at my desk: yankee candles, a box of mini matches, "plackers" dental flossers, Tori amos "boys for pele" cd, a stamper with my address on it (for mailing packages), bust a move 4 for ps1, a container of white out and, oddly enough, a japanese style bowl.

How I see things is that we belong to the "turn the world into a living hell" club. The only other true member of that is russia, china is not quite there yet.

As far as world economics go, if we get into a global pissing match we lose, simple as that. Thank wall street and deregulation allowing our capabilites to be outsourced.
