Poll: Giuliani, McCain, Obama rank high
By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN
Associated Press Writer

Americans have the warmest feelings about former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, according to a poll released Monday that scores the popularity of national leaders.

The Quinnipiac University's "thermometer reading," taken the week after the Nov. 7 election, asked voters to rate their feelings for 20 leaders on a scale of 0 to 100.

Giuliani, a Republican weighing a presidential bid in 2008, scored the highest at 64.2. Obama and McCain, who are also considering a 2008 campaign, finished next at 58.8 and 57.7.

President Bush was 15th out of 20 while his secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, was fourth and former President Clinton fifth.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton scored ninth of the 20 leaders with a score of 49. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee who was roundly criticized before the election for suggesting that students who don't study could end up stuck in Iraq, came in last at 39.6.

Kerry later apologized for what he said was a botched joke.

Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), in line to become the next House Speaker, improved her standing, moving from last to 12th in a few weeks. The next Senate Majority leader, Democrat Harry Reid, was 19th.

"As we enter the presidential campaign of 2008, Giuliani and McCain are in enviable positions," said Peter Brown, assistant poll director. "They are well-regarded and most Americans are quite familiar with them. Obama's showing is impressive, but four in 10 Americans still don't know enough about him to have an opinion."

The telephone poll was conducted from Nov. 13-19. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,623 registered voters nationwide and the poll has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

I'll try asking again..........what is the big deal about Giuliani? I just don't see it.

I don't know. I love Obama, and I can understand McCain. But Giuliani? No one outside of NYC really knows him.

The interesting thing about Giuliani is that he's not the one to break with tradition.

No New York City mayor has moved on to a higher politcal office after leaving the city, and neither will Rudy.

McCain? He'll never win.

Even if a fetus like Obama was his opponent, he'd lose.

Then who do you propose?

Obamba is really the only truly honest candidate that I have seen in a very long time. Everyone says his youth and inexperience is against him, but on the other hand, he also has no real voting record to go after.

I've read articles that said his parents are of the Muslim faith. The right will use this like a hammer. He seems to me at least, to be of the character that he would not want to hurt his family in any way, the same reason Powell said he would never run. If he runs, its going to be a big decison to make.

But Giuliani? No one outside of NYC really knows him.

Do you mean name recognition or his record? I think everyone knows his name, but is unfamiliar with the way he ran New York. He's known for 911 and his mistress...........other than that I have no clue. I don't see how any Republican would vote for him, just for his stance on abortion alone.

Giuliani is being touted as a republican candidate because he projected an image of competence in the aftermath of 9/11. So far as I can tell, that's the sole thing he has going for himself. If he puts himself forward as a serious candidate, there will be some "bimbo eruptions" that will make Bill Clinton's peccadilloes look like grade school affairs.

I think that's one thing he has going for him, he was born in Hawaii, spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, came back to Hawaii, lived in New York City, Chicago, went to Kenya and everything. His mother was white and from Kansas, his biological father was from Kenya, and his step father was from Indonesia. He's been Muslim, but now Christian. When he worked in Chicago he was an organizer and worked with a lot of inner city churches. He went to Yale but also to regular schools too.

Essentially he's a mut.

He certainly does draw crowds wherever he goes. You're the expert. Does he have children? If so, they have to be adorable and I will give him extra points for not using them.

If people want a black man (or woman) to win the White House they'll have to find a black man with more substance than Obama.

A Hawkish McCain would seem like an odd choice at a time of war-weariness

I have to, for once, agree with you Buck. Giuliani has a pretty huge skeleton closet just waiting to be opened.

I am not too sure of his hold on the conservative tag either. He may choose to call himself a conservative but I have never considered him to be one.

Let me see........pro-choice. Pro-gay marriage. Pro-gun control.....not unless the conservative base has changed in the last few days.

Well, come on! Don't keep us waiting. If' he's raped more women than Clinton, let us know all about it.
