View Full Version : Electronic Voting In Florida Screws Up

SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 9 — A Democrat who narrowly lost the Congressional race here is seeking a recount after dozens of people reported problems using Sarasota County’s touch-screen voting machines and a significant number of ballots had no recorded votes in the high-profile race.
The Democrat, Christine Jennings, lost to her Republican opponent, Vern Buchanan, by just 373 votes out of a total 237,861 cast — one of the closest House races in the nation. More than 18,000 voters in Sarasota County, or 13 percent of those who went to the polls Tuesday, did not seem to vote in the Congressional race when they cast ballots, a discrepancy that Kathy Dent, the county elections supervisor, said she could not explain.
In comparison, only 2 percent of voters in one neighboring county within the same House district and 5 percent in another skipped the Congressional race, according to The Herald-Tribune of Sarasota. And many of those who did not seem to cast a vote in the House race did vote in more obscure races, like for the hospital board.
More than 100 voters have told the Jennings campaign that their votes for her did not show up on the summary screen at the end of the touch-screen voting process, and that they had to re-enter them. The candidate’s lawyers said they feared that not everyone had noticed the problem or realized that they could re-enter the vote.
“There is a spontaneous combustion of outcry in this county,” said Kendall Coffey, a lawyer who was on Vice President Al Gore’s legal team in the 2000 presidential recount and is now working for Ms. Jennings. “We are determined to do everything we can to make sure that every vote counts and everything we can to get to the bottom of this.”

Does anyone else find that this happening in Katherine Harris' old congressional district just too weird to be a coincidence? She must have forgot to reprogram the machines when she left and ran for the Senate...
If he lost by 373 votes, then I think a re-count sounds fair..the only problem is, if I'm not mistaken there would be nothing to re-count so they would have to vote all over again.
She must have forgot to reprogram the machines when she left and ran for the Senate
If that kook would have won, then I think there would have been a lot of questions to be answered!

Actually, isn't it funny that a Democrat is asking for a re-count? Come on!
A. Helloooooooo Ms. Jennings.................. You LOST! Get over it! Come back with dignity next time and do a better job at presenting your issues to voters.
B. If you do not know how to vote, then ask! If you don't ask then dont complain!
C. Of course she got one of Al's 2000 Lawyers. Who did we expect she would get?
D. Remeber that all of the issues were in DEMOCRAT CONTROLLED PRECINCTS!

I voted on a touchscreen electronic system and find it odd when people say that they tried to vote for a specific person and it showed that they voted for someone else. That is not how the touchscreen voting system works. You touch the area of the screen listing each person for which you wish to vote and then are shown a summary of your vote which you are to proof. Once you are satisfied after having proofed your vote you press a vote putton that records the vote.
I have to wonder if the problems people seem to be having with electronic voting are just that the technology is beyond them. I am not trying to be mean or hostile in saying this but technology scares some people silly and there is a whole generation of people who seem to be out of touch with technological advancement and a good bit of that generation is housed in the retirement population of Florida.
ECW, when you propagate a lie it doesn't do anything but build support for what to date appears to be a myth. I truly believe that the touchscreen problems the media so loves to scare the populace with about switched votes is myth and amplification of confused reports made by a technology challenged section of the populace.
Lily, what is it about Harris that makes her a kook?

I still don't get your accusation Lily. I have heard her speak as well and didn't find her using her physical appearance in any odd way.
The picture you posted doesn't prove your accusation, it just shows that the woman can ride a horse.
There's a hores in that picture? ;) Ok.........one more and then I'll give up.

Lily, In Texas we see this everyday! Nothin wrong with a country girl for sure!
She is better to look at than most Liberal politicians though :)
Seriously, she seems very articulate and knows the facts. Too many Dem's attacked her in 2000 because she was in the position she was.

My favorite Katherine Harris moment would have to be when, on Fox news, she accused newspapers of doctoring photos of her to make her look ridiculous: she claimed that she NEVER wears blue eyeshadow, while the AP had recently sent out a photo of her wearing, shall we say 'rather dramatic' blue eyeshadow. It took all of about 10 minutes for some blogger to surf over to her campaign website and discover DOZENS of photos of her wearing - you guessed it - bright blue eyeshadow. The image gallery on her website was scrubbed a couple of days later, and she refused to ever address the issue again.

You tell me what part of this whole segment is a lie:

Just because your particular machine did not have any problems does not mean there were no problems anywhere.

"did not seem to vote in the Congressional race when they cast ballots, a discrepancy that Kathy Dent, the county elections supervisor, said she could not explain"
Hummmm... "Did not seem" sounds subjective to me?
Hmmmmm......"Could not explain". Explain exactly what? That people may NOT have wanted to vote in the congressional races? Give me a BREAK!
If you lose by 1 vote or 10,000 it doesn't change the fact that you LOSE!

Well how would you expect me to respond when you claim she is using her femininity and has no brains and then you post no proof and pictures that you say prove your point which truly provide no proof at all? If I could post a soundfile of a catfight it would be posted here. :)

Actually it was a sarcastic comment. I have to remember that certain people on this forum actually accused me of not having a sense of humor for not getting a joke some neo-con posted prior to the election. I am returning the sentiment now.
