View Full Version : Polls Tied Up Again

Things are tied up and that was before McCain spoke tonight. He'll probably have the lead once the next polls come out.

Keep on bashing Palin. It's working (for us).

(CBS) The presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain is now even at 42 percent, according to a new CBS News poll conducted Monday-Wednesday of this week. Twelve percent are undecided according to the poll, and one percent said they wouldn't vote.

This is in contrast to a poll conducted last weekend, where the Obama-Biden ticket led McCain-Palin by eight points, 48 percent to 40 percent.

McCain has also closed the enthusiasm gap some with Obama, but it still exists. Fifty-five percent of Obama's supporters are enthusiastic about their choice, and now so are 35% of McCain's. Last weekend, just 25 percent of McCain's supporters were enthusiastic about him, compared to 67 of Obama's supporters.

This week's polling continues to show voters waiting to decide about Sarah Palin (see yesterday's poll on Palin). But in interviewing done yesterday, 83 percent of registered voters said that spouse and family of a candidate will not affect their votes.

Other factors within the race and overall opinions of the candidates, however, have remained similar from this weekend.

Thirty-eight percent say they have a favorable view of Obama, compared 34 percent unfavorable and 27 percent undecided. For McCain, it's 37 percent favorable, 36 percent unfavorable and 27 percent undecided.

McCain maintains his large advantage on the likelihood of being an effective commander-in-chief - 46 percent of voters say it is "very likely" McCain would be an effective commander-in-chief, compared to 24 percent who say that about Obama.

But McCain still has one big deficit to make up -- just 44 percent of voters say he understands their needs and problems, compared with 60 percent who say that about Obama.

In the poll, Obama continues to have a lead with women voters, 43 percent to 38 percent, while McCain has the edge with men, 46 percent to 41 percent. As has been standard in this campaign, voters under age 45 are backing Obama, while older voters are supporting McCain.

McCain wins the support of married voters and Obama has the backing of voters who are not married. It should be noted, though, that most married voters are older while those who are not married tend to be younger.

Independents in this poll are divided. In the poll conducted over the weekend, Obama had a six-point advantage with this group, but now the lead is three points, 39 percent to 36 percent.

The poll also shows that the majority of Clinton supporters continue to support Obama - 67 percent in this poll, up from 58 percent last weekend.

McCain has seen a similar uptick from white evangelicals since the weekend - 66 percent now, up from 57 percent.

do you realize that public opinion can change very rapidly? wait for prices to start spiking again, the economy continuing to unravel, and our geopolitical standing continue to slip, and see what happens.. and at the end of the day, when they all vote for one of the two corrupt parties, they'll both be voting for more of the same. these two horrible parties have been in power for far too long.

from what i've seen in person and online, people definitely seem to treat running our country as if it was a contest. either you bet black, or red, despite the fact that there are still other options.

That's why I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't be better in the long run for Obama to win. In my scenario, this hastens the meltdown and gets us back on track (see the freedom cycle in my sig) faster. On the other hand, I have a responsibility to nearly 50 employees and live in a state which makes a difference (Florida) so I wonder how I don't vote McCain for simple tax reasons (and maybe a little satisfaction from knowing what a blow it would be to the smug Obama voters who seem to know so much which is wrong).

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There are certainly no heroes on either side for me.

couldn't agree more.. i created a thread in the op-eds essentially hinting on the same concept - that both mccain and obama have the potential to be great presidents. problem as osborn stated is that their records and their parties' records represent the status quo when combined.

problem is that most americans would agree with us, but they can't pull away from the lesser of two evils when voting. cowards or idiot sheep, you decide...

I have to agree with bishop on this. For the last 40years our country has been in a down spiral towards disaster because of the politicalness of both parties. I feel the people of our country keep saying the same message but neither the Democrats or Republicans get it. Stop the damn bickering, the he said she said B.S., saying whatever just to get elected and start doing wtf the people of this country want done.

No one is 'bashing' Palin. Critiquing her qualifications is not bashing.

As a matter of fact, the media so far has given her a pass. This whole 'Palin as a victim' nonsense has been such a calculated strawman by Republicans. Republicans are the ones talking up Palin's personal problems as if it is an issue, not Dems and certainly not the sorry ass media.

I guarantee you if Palin was a Democrat the media and Republicans would have already buried her for this stuff.

And the bounce in the polls is only due to the GOP convention and was expected.

Hold on!

I thought CBS was on the right's shitlist for all time and that everything referenced to them was invalid.

These are the facts and the are undisputed. Before the Palin speech Obama was up +6.0 points in the RCP poll. After the Palin speech Obama LOST -2.0 points in the RCP poll. I just checked the RCP poll today and Obama feels the pain of the bite from the Palin speech

Dgun, you claim is ludicrous.

Megyn Kelley is absolutely beautiful here. She catches this Bozo and his magazine bashing Palin:

Megyn Kelley Demolishes Us Magazine Jerk on Live Television
By Jimmie on Sep 3, 2008 in Oh, THAT liberal media., Sarah Palin

This is an absolutely beautiful interview. Fox News’ Megyn Kelley interviews some hapless schmuck trying to defend Us magazine’s hit job on Sarah Palin and family. She catches him in one outright lie and makes him stutter worse than Mel Tillis’ and Porky Pig’s love child.

His best line came when Kelly asked him why the article didn’t note a few rather large details about the supposed “Troopergate” story: “We didn’t have time to get into everything you mentioned”. No, of course they didn’t. Smear stories have to get out while they’re hot. Real journalism takes time and integrity. This bozo obviously didn’t have nearly enough of either one.

Allah says it wasn’t an interview so much as a cross-examination. He’s right and it was beautiful.

If this isn't bashing Palin in the US magazine, I don't know what is in the media.

As far as polls, the only significant poll comes on the first Tuesday in November. All others are almost meaningless.

Dgun, you claim is ludicrous.

Not it's not. It's absolutely 100% true. And about the only smart political play the McCain campaign has made in months, that is building this bullshit strawman and pretending 'the liberal media', 'the democrats' are attacking Palin because her daughter got knocked up.

'Some are saying'
'Others say'
'According to sources'

It's all total freaking bullshit and our stupid ass worthless media along with our sheeple public bought into it.

It wasn't 10 minutes that this was revealed that Republicans and McCain supporters started: "Does this actually help her campaign?"

And then 2 minutes later Wolf Blitzer is saying: "Does this actually help her campaign?"

It's pathetic.

US magazine certainly did bash Palin and that is quite likely to lead to a backlash.

OH, the US magazine?!! The hard hitting grocery store rag that spends all its time chasing Britney Spears around trying to get another shot of her vagina? Right now they have an article about "MTV VMAs: Worst Dressed of All Time!", but I'm sure you guys already knew that since it's such an important publication and you probably read it everyday. And to think FOX news was able to snoop this anti-Palin article out and expose US magazine and the 'liberal media' and 'demurrcrats' for what they are, anti-goodness. Thanks FOX for helping build this retarded strawman.

US Magazine?! Shit, be serious for crying out loud.

Obama? I figure a whole host of guys will come forward after the election talking about drugs, sex and their good times with Barry. Between his crooked buddies and fellow junkies this guy's going to put the publishing industry in the black. If elected, spin offs from book sales could get bigger than Clinton, Carter and Buchanan (another Dem incompetent accused of being gay) combined.
