Wolves' victory slips away

ROSEVILLE - Woodland's Wolves dropped the ball and had to settle for a 5-5, eight-inning tie against Woodcreek in Sierra Foothill League baseball Thursday.

With two outs in the seventh inning and a 5-4 Wolves' lead, the error tied the game. That leaves Woodland 1-1-1 in the SFL, traveling to play Roseville today.

Woodland jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 5-3 behind the pitching of Adrian Perez, who went seveninnings.

The Timberwolves used a two-out base hit to close to 5-4 before a pop fly in shallow left field was misplayed.

"It probably should have been caught," Wolves coach Javy Valdivia said. "The ball stayed up in the air too long."

In the Wolves' first at-bat, Garret Wright singled and Mark Laugenour doubled. Wright scored when Perez's flyball was dropped. Zach Vawter-Scoggins then laced a two-run single.

Woodland scored in the second on Kyle Gallagher's double, a Geoff Lozada single and a wild pitch.

In the sixth, the Wolves scored again for a 5-3 lead. Brandon Lockwood and Lozada singled before Wright walked with the bases loaded.

Sean McGinnis pitched the eighth inning.

"Defensively, we played OK until the last play when we needed it," Valdivia said. "Woodcreek is a very solid team. They kept battling."

Laugenour will be the starting pitcher today.

"We're right in games," Valdivia said. "We're setting ourselves up and not finishing. Today we didn't finish. I think we're still in a good spot. We just need to close out a game."

In the bottom of the seventh, Woodcreek scored twice. After one out, Ryan Rieger singled and Dan Wolford was hit by a pitch.

After a strikeout, Tyler Privett singled to load the bases.

Then a dropped flyball in left field allowed two runs to score.

The game will be continued in their next meeting at Woodcreek on Thursday, May 2.
