(CNSNews.com) - Is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin the best choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency? Many Americans are asking that question, and Sen. John McCain answered it with a resounding “yes” on Sunday.

“The facts are funny things,” McCain said in an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams.

“She’s been in elected office longer than Sen. Obama. She’s been the chief executive of the state that provides 20 percent of America’s energy; she has balanced budgets; she has had executive experience as governor, as mayor, as a city council member and PTA.

“So she was in elected office when Sen. Obama was still a local community organizer. He’s never had one day of executive experience.”

Palin served two terms on the Wasilla (Alaska) City Council, from 1992-1996. She was elected mayor of Wasilla in 1996 and served two terms there as well, until 2002, when she ran for lieutenant governor and lost.

She chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for one year, until 2004, and was elected governor of Alaska in 2006.

“I think it’s almost ludicrous to compare her experience in elected office and as a leader of one of the most important states in America -- certainly one of the largest -- to compare her experience with his. It’s no contest,” McCain said.

McCain said Palin is the best person to be his running mate “in every way.”

“She has experience, she’s been an executive, she knows how to balance budgets, she knows how towns and cities work.”

McCain also said Palin has set an inspiring example of “home, family and service and putting her country first.”

Obama’s experience

Barack Obama’s campaign Web site, in a “meet the candidate” section, mentions that Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983, moved to Chicago in 1985, and “became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment.”

(Elsewhere on the page, he says he “worked for Christian churches in Chicago, helping communities devastated when steel plants closed.”)

Obama earned his law degree from Harvard in 1991, then-- after turning down “lucrative jobs” in law firms, he returned to Chicago to practice civil rights law and teach constitutional law. During this time, he mentions that he led a “successful voter registration drive.”

Obama says his advocacy work finally led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years. In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.”

“His first law [as a U.S. Senator] was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent,” the Web site says. The Senate passed that law two years ago -- in September 2006.

She's been mayor for a small town in the middle of nowhere. She left that job, not with a "balanced budget", but far in debt.

She's been govenor for a state that has about as many people as a Chicago suburb...

She has ZERO forigen policy experience.

She has manipulated state government for her own ends, both personal and otherwise. She has enforced cronyism, tried to ban books and believes that abortion should be banned even if the woman was raped or in cases of incest.

If these things count as "experience", I think we need to change what we are looking for to GOOD EXPERIENCE.

Well, to be fair, she might have some experiece with foreign nationals. I dunno - do drunken Russian sailors count as experience? :ponder:

In order for the left to make their argument, they must downplay Palin was a state governor and mayor. While she has more experience in leadership than Comrade Obama, Comrade Obama is not without some leadership experience. After all, he did chair a board founded by his admitted terrorist friend, William Ayres.

And he did, "give a speech in 2002," of course.

Palin was one of the director's of Ted Steven's 527 group...
Palin Was a Director of Embattled Sen. Stevens’s 527 Group (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/01/palin_was_a_director_of_embatt.html)

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Palin’s relationship with Alaska’s senior senator may be one of the more complicated aspects of her new position as Sen. John McCain’s running mate; Stevens was indicted in July 2008 on seven counts of corruption.

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

Stevens had been helpful to Palin during her run for governor, swooping in with a last moment endorsement. And the two filmed a campaign commercial together to highlight Stevens’s endorsement of Palin during the 2006 race.

She was also a member of a secessionist party in Alaska in the 90's... LINKY (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/members-of-frin.html)

More food for thought on the wisdom of McCain's vetting process... :ponder:

No because no matter who McCain selected as his V.P you be first in line casting stones. Consider Obama's V.P. pick, his son is serving in Iraq yet Biden has been oppossed to the Iraq war, vowed to fight the Iraq surge said it wouldn't work. Turns out the Iraq surge worked, a huge success. The fact of the matter here is that Biden simply doesn't respect our troops.

Horrible, horrible logic...but that aside...I don't know that the surge has been effective. From what I hear, the splurge has been effective. How long the US can keep the splurge is a different story, however.

If you repeat the same horrible logic often enough, does it suddenly become true?

Do you continue to deny the facts and walk in a circle of illusion?

And more than Comrade Obama has done.

Good thread. Comrade Obama did indeed make a huge mistake to come out bashing her for her "inexperience." She indeed has been in elective office longer than Obama and has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined.

They lose once again on this argument.

Libbies are scared shitless that they can't come up with anything on Palin that's credible. They're now resorting to bashing her children. That's how desperate they've become.

But those jobs alone give Palin more managerial experience than Obama...and you support him...so are you being a hypocrite? Or, do you just hate women?

Easy, I like you... but if you are going to accuse me of "hating women," we don't have much to talk about.

Time will tell. I think, however, you'll find that Kapitänleutnant McCain made the huge mistake.
