Deferments, Asthma Kept Biden Out Of Vietnam
Biden Received 5 Deferments Before Being Declared Medically Ineligible For Vietnam
DOVER, Del., Aug. 31, 2008
E-Mail Story
(AP) Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the same number of deferments received by Vice President Dick Cheney, and later was disqualified from service because of asthma as a teenager.
Officials with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign released Biden's Selective Service records at the request of The Associated Press. Less detailed records were available from a National Archives facility in Philadelphia.
According to the documents, Biden, 65, received several deferments while he was an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and later as a law student at Syracuse University. A month after undergoing a physical exam in April 1968, Biden received a Selective Service classification of 1-Y, meaning he was available for service only in the event of national emergency.
"As a result of a physical exam on April 5, 1968, Joe Biden was classified 1-Y and disqualified from service because of asthma as a teenager," said David Wade, a campaign spokesman.

1. chickenhawk
1. Older male who seeks the company or favours of an younger male. The term has homosexual overtones.
2. A politician or other person who promotes war without having had any personal experience of it; especially those who have avoided the experience.

Could've been worse. Could've been for a leaky ass. But then, Rush Limbaugh turned that disorder from a deferrment to a career... :madlaugh:

Not at all...When Democrats control the Military they have no problem using it. They just like to use it places where it isn't stategically important to us...I fully expect Obama to invade Sudan.

In order to be a chickenhawk, one has to be a hawk.
I think Zo's point is that Biden isn't a hawk, so even the non-sexual definition of chickenhawk doesn't apply.

No. At best he WAS a chickenhawk. He's not promoting war anymore and therefore can't be one.

I think the majority of politicians fall in that category, especially the current President Bush.

Honestly, I can't say that I've lost an ounce of respect for anyone who tried to get out of serving in Vietnam or served, but got out early, or whatever.
This includes Clinton, Bush, Kerry, Limbaugh, Cheney and everyone else that used whatever means they had at their disposal to avoid being bogged down in that terrible mess.
Where "chickenhawk" comes into play, for me, is when these republicans like Limbaugh call Bill Clinton a coward and draft dodger for doing the exact same things that Rush himself did. Or, when the Republicans question the patirotism of people who don't support the war in Iraq. It's the hypocrisy that gets me...not the fact that they choose not to fight.

We've heard it all before and we've heard the response, too... The people you quote were saying things based on the cherry-picked evidence that Bush fed them. People were saying these things before we had weapons inspectors on the ground saying that they needed more time. Etc, etc, etc...

Conservative, I am not defending anything else Biden did, but have you ever experienced Asthma? I have. I have debilitating adult Asthma and not knowing where the next breath is coming from is NOT something I would wish on anyone. I cannot trash Biden for getting a deferment for his Asthma.
Having had draft number of 3 during that era I can honestly say that student deferments were had a a LOT of people. Also, being not physically qualified because of asthma is completely legitimate. Also, for two years of my career I was involved in screening applicants for the Navy. I've seen many rejected for service for much less insignificant reasons than athsma.
Not defending one way or another, just stating facts.

Um, asthma is a legitimate medical problem, and a completely valid reason for a deferment. Cheney, on the other hand, got 4 deferments for being in college, immediately got married upon graduation, and then, quite literally 9 months after it was decided that married men without children were no longer exempt from the draft, had a child (what a coincidence.)
