Just finished reading this classic written in the early 50's. While its influence was no doubt based on some of the Dictatorships toppled just years before, it has its fingerprints running through American politics to date.

Bradberry makes comments about how the people are kepy happy with endless entertainment on large screen TV's, and through total lack of controversy, as well as alcohol. This seems prescient in that we now live in a society obsessed with sports, hollywood, celebrity, and partying. Additionally, Bradberry comments in one scene through a woman, character that children are sent away to be educated by the state early on, and are rarely seen. The state controls the people through early indoctrination and through its supplying of the people an escape from reality.

The book speaks of the burning of books to control the masses from thinking too much, and thus are much more easily controlled. In one section the comment is made:

"The solid un-moving cattle of the majority, O God, the terrible tyranny of the majority."

He was speaking of the majority which lived wasted lives of loneliness, while being entertained, and who as the majority supported the status quo of the knowledge suppression.

Leftists claim that conservative fundementalist types are the ones guilty of this suppression today. Are they? Were the proclomations that "Tinky-Winky and Barney being gay and evil ever suppress their airings? Has the expression of music become more restrictive since the 50's? Who Jim Morrison be arrested today? Would the film "Bonnie and Clyde" be R-Rated today? Are books being banned across the country? Over the last 30 years while Republicans controlled much of the political foreplay in Washington...have they been guilty of metephorically speaking...buring books?

We do, however, today have a party that wishes to end free speech in talk radio, who shuts down the Congress and turns out the lights to crush open debate in Congress. What are we to expect if the Democrats controll the Whitehouse and Congress? Will there be Book burnings on the Whitehouse lawn?

While I'd like to think the Democrats would eliminate some of the ignorance that plagues this country, I highly doubt they can, will or even have a desire to burn some of the stupid shit that is published these days.

However, I'd love to be entertained by your continued thoughts on this, conservative. Got any good examples of Democrats wanting to burn books?

I love all the right wing fear mongering of Democrats. It's all so outrageous and off the wall. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with next. Isn't there any actual truth you can use to debate with? Must you conservatives always use outright lies and smears when you mention the Democrats?

Calling for equal time on the radio is not in any way censorship.

Where were you in the first 6 years of the Bush admin when the Republicans refused to let the Democrats have hearings?

Where's the honesty in the Republican party?
