When I told a friend I switched to "Democracy Forums", he thought it was like moveon.org. The name gives an impression that conservatives are not the target audience.

hmmmm...... I always thought it sounded conservative. Though I never had much opinion on the name one way or the other.

:D
People just slay me.
"Democracy" - "Democrat"
"Republic" - "Republicans"
"Servative" - "Lybuhrul"
People get so wrapped up in their labels, they confuse words fundamental to our way of governance.
I think it would be interesting to see how many people on this board realize that the vast majority of American political thought, both of what we so commonly refer to as "conservative" and "liberal" is actually all part of the same superset of political ideology, being American Liberalism, which falls on the right of the scale.
This means that Ted Kennedy, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Regan all pretty much have the same political beliefs, with just minor areas of inconsistency.
As Americans, we really exaggerate these differences and blow it all out of proportion. That's because we’re all so silly.
Ted, Barry, and Ronnie: all capitalists, individualists (as opposed to collectivists), all believe in inalienable rights, all advocate Representative Democracy.

Maybe because your friend isn't keen on democracy as a notion. I guess it says a lot for your friend not to freely associate "democracy" with "conservatives." Quite telling, if you ask me...

Well it was a name I acquired for a good deal. I also own politicsforum.com which points here. I have toyed with changing the site officially over to politicsforum.com.

I think that name is better, but the problem is that a politicsforum.org exists. That would really look like a ripoff.

Convince him to join you......we need more from the right. I promise I'll be nice to him.:D

I also own politicsforum.com
AhHA!!!
That's why it happened. HeHe!
I'm a member over at politicsforum.org and the other day I thought I typed in politicsforum.org and it came to democracyforums and I was scratching my head wondering what the hell happened. Obviously I swapped a "com" for an "org".

Am I missing something here? Are we really so nuts that we've stigmatized the word Democracy?

I think some people have stigmatized the word Democracy. When I got the name I didn't even flinch myself and I am a republican. I only realized after launching that some may assume this site is about Democrats...which it's NOT.

We? It's the democrats that have damaged the word. :)
I don't think it's a huge issue, but I like politicsforum.com better.

You're just mad that you didn't think of it first, so, in your never-ending smear campaign against the Democrats, you have decided to smear democracy as well. Nice try. No cigar.
Democracy Forums works just fine for me.

Any proof-positive examples of how Democrats have "damaged the word" Democracy, or were you just doing the monkey thing of throwing feces?
Personally, I like and respect this forum for its balance and overall civility (which is a hard find among political forums) and would suggest that it doesn't need the introduction of members who don't get what Democracy means. So the current name is just fine.

Let's try to keep a topic inside News and Feedback away from a debate.
Start a new topic... "Have Democrats injured the name Democracy?" hehehe

I love the name too but to be honest I know it's a valuable name. I am hoping one day to sell it for a large profit.
