Police: Man Imprisoned Family for 3 Years

Georgia Man Allegedly Held Wife, 4 Kids in Insect-Filled Mobile Home

A Georgia man allegedly imprisoned his wife and children in a filthy mobile home filled with trash and insects for more than three years, police said.

Raymond Daniel Thurmond, 36, was arrested Tuesday on charges of rape, false imprisonment and cruelty to children, said Lavonia, Ga., Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.
Thurmond was being held at the Franklin County jail and is expected to make a court appearance later today. He did not have a lawyer as of Wednesday morning.

Carlisle said Thurmond held his wife and his four children, ages 9, 12, 13 and 14, in a mobile home filled with garbage and insects. He said the family was allowed out of the mobile home once in the past several years, to visit relatives in North Carolina, but returned after two hours.

When investigators entered the mobile home, hundreds of cockroaches fell from the ceiling, Carlisle said, adding that the home was filled with roaches, maggots and trash.
"It was probably the most deplorable, disgusting thing I've ever seen," Carlisle said.
Thurmond's wife, whose name is not being released, escaped and asked for help after Thurmond allegedly began an affair with another woman, Carlisle said.

Thurmond's wife told police she had been raped by her husband in front of her children, Carlisle said.

Carlisle said the children were malnourished and the three youngest had never attended school. He said the eldest child was pulled out of school in the second grade.
He said school records showed the children were being home-schooled, but that investigators found no evidence that the children were being taught at home.

The manager of the mobile home park told the Associated Press that she never suspected that a family was being held captive and that Thurmond said his family was out of town visiting sick relatives.

Gunman Wounds Ark. Dems Party Chairman

3 Shots Fired at Arkansas Democratic HQ; Party Director Says Chairman Hospitalized

A gunman entered the Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters Wednesday and shot the party chairman, who was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

The gunman asked to speak to the party chairman, Bill Gwatney, and fired three shots at the office near the state Capitol. "He came in and went into this office and started shooting," police Lt. Terry Hastings told reporters near the party headquarters.
Gwatney, a former legislator, was in critical condition, Hastings said. Party officials confirmed the victim was Gwatney.

The suspect was chased into Grant County, south of Little Rock, and apprehended after being shot, the police spokesman said. The suspect's condition and motive were not known.

Sarah Lee, a sales clerk at a flower shop across street from the party headquarters, said that around noon Gwatney's secretary ran into the shop and asked someone to call 911.

363 Animals, 6 Kids, 1 Woman Jailed

More Than 360 Pets, Farm Animals Found Inside Missouri Property; Children Removed

More than 360 domestic and farm animals, many of them emaciated, injured and suffering from mange and parasites, were rescued Tuesday from a filthy southwest Missouri property where they were hoarded and bred, authorities said.
The owner of the property was charged with child endangerment because six children, ages 1 to 11, also had been living in what authorities described as an unbelievable scene: 12 to 15 house trailers stacked to the ceilings with junk, trash and debris, crawling with cockroaches. The only water source was a bunch of garden hoses strung together.
"These homes are not fit for anyone to live in," human or animal, Polk County Sheriff Steve Bruce said.

The 363 animals include more than 70 dogs and more than three dozen cats, plus donkeys, rabbits, ducks, chickens, and exotic fish. The Humane Society of Missouri and Polk County also found 12 to 15 dead rabbits, dogs, cats, and poultry.

Authorities descended upon the property with warrants after the family who owns the land failed to heed warnings last month to begin providing proper care, said Tim Rickey, the Humane Society's director of rescues and investigations.

In the days since those warnings, many of the animals had been released from their cages, prompting neighbors to complain. Authorities took a closer look and found that children also were on the 80-acre rural property near Pleasant Hope in southwest Missouri. Child-welfare workers removed the children were about a week ago, Bruce said.

Property owner Virginia Gambriel, 61, was arrested and charged Tuesday with two counts of felony child endangerment over living conditions Bruce described as the worst he's seen in 16 years of public service.

More charges are expected, against Gambriel and others, Bruce said. Gambriel is being held on $7,500 bond, and doesn't yet have an attorney, he said.

Three families lived on the property, authorities said, but the total number of residents wasn't clear. The property, littered with 15 to 20 abandoned vehicles, was "in the brush in the middle of nowhere on a dead-end road" that deputies rarely visited, Bruce said.

Ex-Cop Gets 440 Years for Rapes

Prosecutors: He used police computer to research rape victims before attacks

A former police sergeant convicted of raping four women was sentenced to 440 years in prison Tuesday.

Jeff Pelo, formerly with the Bloomington police, slouched forward in his chair but otherwise didn't react as Judge Robert Freitag issued the sentence. Two victims and their families clapped in the McLean County courtroom.

Jurors deliberated for parts of three days in June before convicting the 17-year police veteran of 35 counts, including 25 counts of aggravated sexual assault.
Prosecutors used dozens of witnesses and evidence found in Pelo's home to portray him as a man obsessed with violent pornography who paradoxically wanted his victims to like him. They said his police computer login was used to research rape victims before the attacks, which occurred between 2002 and 2005.
