McCain’s Green-Eyed Monster
By MAUREEN DOWD
WASHINGTON
Not since Iago and Othello obsessed on the comely Cassio, not since Richard of Gloucester killed his two nephews, not since Nixon and Johnson glowered at the glittering J.F.K., has there been such an unseemly outpouring of boy envy.
Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson and John Edwards have all been crazed with envy over the ascendance of the new “It” guy, Barack Obama.
Unlike his wife, Bill Clinton — the master of fake sincerity — still continues to openly begrudge his party’s betrothed.
Asked by Kate Snow of ABC News in Africa whether Obama was ready to be president, Clinton gave a classic Clintonian answer: “You could argue that no one’s ever ready to be president.”
As always, the Big Dog was more concerned with himself — asserting that he’s not a racist — than his party. Bill Clinton is not a racist. We can posit that. But he did play subtle racial politics in the primary. It’s way past time for him to accept the fact that there’s a new wunderkind in town.
...“John’s eaten up with envy,” said one. “His image of himself was always the handsome, celebrity flyboy. So, according to MoDo, everyone is jealous of Obama and that's the reason behind...what?
Them opposing him in the primaries and now the general?
What if they just think he'd be a lousy candidate as well as a president?
I think Dowd's off her meds.

What is the basis for your statement? Most people are enamored with Obama, because of various and sundry reason, not the least of which, he is the freshest, most exciting candidate since JFK...and the Repubs, John McSame, Jesse Jackson, and Bill Clinton, among others, can't stand it.
Did anyone really think that George Bush was going to do well as president? Give me a break.

I don't get McCain, so I'm not sure what to say about him except to remind every one he is the most Liberal Republican they have left.
Bill Clinton I get better. He is not a racist. He is simply a snake. He will certainly use race to get what he wants as easily as he would use any thing else, but I do not believe he is a racist.
Obama is no angel. Even tho I support him and have from the NH debates. He is not as great as I first thought he would be. I think no matter who is elected, there will be very little real change. Perhaps a little more from Obama after all he will have a Democratic majority, but no dramatic changes.
Who's left? Barr? I would rather see McCain get elected. Nader? hell I'd rather see Barr get elected lol!
Bottom line. I'm not as excited about Obama as I was before. In fact if he gets too much more wishy washy and weak in the knees I may vote for McCain!

Carter was probably dealt the worst hand of any president in modern history, primarily due to the Iranian hostage crisis, rampant inflation and significant energy woes. Those things would get any president in over his head. That said, he may have lacked the temperament to be president.

Johnson, escalated the war, we were at war during his whole presidency. Many consider his war policies a miserible failure.
Carter, great man lousy president. he quoted his daughter for crying out loud about economics! LOL.
Clinton, he was ok.
Nixon, got us out of vietnam, granted it took him 5 years!
Ford, ok, a bit clumsy tho.
Reagan, great.

How about somebody that is not complicit in a bunch of crimes against their country, and countrymen. Ron Paul springs to mind.
At any rate, I don't recommend dredging the depths of the two established parties looking for people who want to do things right. These people alll get money from their respective parties for espousing the wrong message, and buying their way into politics. That's how the became Democrats, and Republicans.

All that rhetoric goes to crap, when Ron Paul, himself, ran as a Republican.

Frankly, I don't see how this is the same in any way.
Ron Paul "might" have some racist tendencies. ( yet to actually be proven in any substantial way )
The other guys, on the other hand, have no respect for Constitutional authority, and t's quite obvious just by viewing their voting rocord.
This isn't even a case of apples, and oranges. This is more like comparing apples to elephants.

I'm sorry, but just as I argued with Mia and Osbourn.......if he has so much integrity and is the best thing since sliced bread, he would have made a break with the Republican party instead of playing it safe and ran as a Libertarian, which he really is, IMO. Libertarians would have a candidate that people would actually know and vote for.......but he wanted to keep his safe steady job instead.
All of you bitch and moan about the two party system, and hold up Ron Paul like he is some sort of God......when he is just like every other candidate out there. Out for himself and not this country.

how do we know it's not a fire, unless we investigate? Just because you threw a bucket of water on the campfire, doesn't mean you didn't toast some marshmellows. Get real.
The links to reports of his racial biases are far and wide...and we're supposed to believe that op-eds coming out of his office and on his letterhead, he was oblivious to. Right. And if we keep looking, we just might find WMD. One never knows, do one?

And talk about Obama whipping everyone into a frenzy....Ron Paul got millions more than even McCain, as his internet ducats were flowing fast and furious, for long while. But as 'kind and gentler" as he portrayed, he ran as a Republican.
Why? If he had any serious hopes of capturing the nomination, he would have had to cowtow to the base, which even McCain is having trouble solidifying. No chance in Hell. So what was he doing, but collecting a war chest, to use at his discretion...or is he sending back all those donations? Please.

Difference between you and me, I can give a rats ass about party loyalty, you can have it, enjoy being a follower. Personally I prefer to do my own thinking. If it lines up with my party fine, if not to fucking bad, they will have to deal with it, not me.
I call it like I see it. I agree all politicians suck, including third party wanna-bes. But if any of them did any good I give them credit, no matter which party it was. LBJ was a total dick head! Shit for brains, worse then Bush! Wanna do body counts compared to the Vietnam war he esculated and the Iraq war?
Nixon at least finally got us out and he did NOTHING that Kennedy didn't do except he got caught.
Yea both Bush sucked.

I don't think it's about following any marching band. You got two choices. McCain or Obama. I say the Republicans had their shot, for 8 years, and royally blew it. Time for the pendulum to swing in the other direction, if for nothing more than "balance".

Well, excuse me, professor, but unless you choose from the most likely candidates, instead of wasting your vote on a third party candidate with a snowball's chance in Hell, unlike the distinct possibility held by Ross Perot, the choice is clear.

And as long as you parrot that pundits view, and reuse to think it through for yourself, that's the exact reality you will have.
The system was designed so we could throw the undesrving schmucks out on their ear, but every time anybody suggests we actually act in that capacity, we have people like yourself saying it's a "waste".

No. How many times are we told that the system is far from perfect, but it's among the best we have. You'd vote for a third party candidate, with no prospect of securing the office, as a statement. Well, so much for your statement, instead of electing the lesser of two evils. Practicality.
Until a better system arises, or a third party candidate has real momentum, I guess we are doing the best we can.

Don't include in me in that collective.
In the realm of your potential for bringing change, I like the idea of Instant Runoff Voting. That might be the only way to break through this two party lock on power, and all the perversions of the law they have created to remain in control.
