Lieberman ‘on McCain short-list’
By Stephanie Kirchgaessner in Washington

Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s *campaign.
Mr Lieberman, who has campaigned for the Arizona senator, has long been *considered an unconventional but plausible choice for Mr McCain.
Although Democrats have rejected Mr McCain’s image as a maverick politician, Mr Lieberman’s support for the presumptive Republican nominee has, much to the chagrin of his former *colleagues, helped to boost Mr McCain’s reputation as a bi-partisan legislator with friends on both sides of the aisle. Mr Lieberman, a staunch supporter of Israel, could also help Mr McCain win over Jewish voters.
“[McCain] loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short-]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don’t take someone who costs you votes,” said one McCain adviser.
But not everyone would be enthusiastic about Mr Lieberman being added to the ticket. While Mr Lieberman has staunchly defended Mr McCain’s support of the surge, the escalation of US troops in Iraq, and the lawmakers have teamed up on legislative proposals to *combat global warming, the registered independent is aligned with Democrats on most other issues.
“Conservatives would be pissed as hell – I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do,” the McCain adviser said.
Another McCain adviser said that it was unlikely that the Republican candidate would base his decision on “tactical considerations”.
“He can be pragmatic, but on the biggest decisions he tends to favour his instinct for the bigger picture,” the adviser said.
Mr Lieberman’s office declined to comment. But when the senator was asked recently whether he would decline a request by Mr McCain he said: “It’s not going to happen”.
Mr Lieberman has left open the possibility that he would speak at the Republican National Convention, a move that would probably ensure that Democrats would strip him of his chairmanship of the committee on homeland security. Democratic leaders allowed Mr Lieberman to caucus with them in the Senate even after he left the party to become an independent, because it gave the party control of the Senate. *However, most analysts agree that if, as expected, Democrats win more seats in this year’s election, Mr Lieberman will be forced out of his coveted role on the *committee.
Speculation surrounding Mr McCain’s short-list of potential nominees has so far focused on Republicans, including Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and his rival for the Republican nomination, Tim Pawlenty, the governor of Minnesota, and Rob Portman, the former Ohio *congressman.
The McCain campaign declined to comment.

McCain needs all the help he can get, I'd go for Lieberman since he has experience in correcting McCain's 'mistakes.'

Warhawk... bad idea. If those two or John McCain with anyone else, are elected, the destruction of American democracy and quality of life, is not very off away.
McCain-Lieberman, two old guys with nothing to offer but a continuation of the Bush-Cheney policies. Lobbyists, especially AIPAC WILL run the executive... again....and will very likely include btw incompetance and coverup. WWIII is almost guaranteed.

Don't think for one moment he isn't the single embodiment of pro-Israel lobby.

Regardless as to who he picks as VP, McCain is still a loser.

:madlaugh: Tell us how you really feel!
Well, there are a lot of Republicans in Democrat drag. Anyway... AIPAC and Benyamin Netanyahu would be in total control of US foreign policy if these two got in.
I can't imagine solid Republican conservatives going for this though. Aren't even THEY fed up with being ignored? Neither of these two men have ever represented a solid rightwing agenda. They may paint their faces with it now... to get the dumbass rightwing vote, but if elected its all Israel, all big oil and the rich, all the time.... Lipservice only to what are now just side issues, like abortion, gun rights, immigration, affirmative action and others conservative froth at the mouth about.
Why do rightwingers defend the last eight years and support it for another four? Wierd.

In response to your last statement...they cannot even defend the last eight years, and any talk of support for Bush/Cheney, the war, the war on terrorism, the war on drugs, FEMA, free trade, immigration reform, the borders and ports, dangerous imports, is precisely, "lip service", spin, denial, lunacy, wishful thinking and belief in the utter stupidity and sheepish behavior on the part of the American populace.
I'm thinking the election won't even be close...it's all hype and smoke and mirrors. Americans have had their fill of Republicans and Republicanism, for some time to come.

If Lieberman should get the republican VP nomination, he will have the unique distinction of having run for president for two parties and lost for both.
I have no particular feelings about Lieberman--I might like him as a person, but I wouldn't trust him as far as I could see him--particularly with the emerging evidence that Bush and his minions manipulated the intelligence even though they knew there were no WMDs in Iraq, as revealed in Ron Suskind's book. A pro-war stance under those circumstances is simply indefensible.

Right. I just can hear the rejoicing in the streets. Dream on.
The Republican base doesn't want him, just as Hillary's supporters don't want Obama....
The question is will they vote for him, in spite of their discontent, and will Hillary's supporters vote for Obama.

LIEberman is at the very least just too painful to listen to him talk! But I could live with that if not for the fact he is Israel's official mouth piece! We do not need a Israel lobbyist in the White House. The 5000+ in Washington is plenty I think. :)

If Obama is not elected, I could live with McCain. I have a hunch he will return to his old Maverick self if elected lol. I fear Obama will not have the backbone or balls to stand up against Russian aggression. I love his social stands, but question his readiness to maintain a strong military and command the respect we deserve. I hate politics!

It's hysterical how all these libbies loved him when he was a democrat but when he started to think outside the box and against the left-wing extremist mentality they turned on him.
And save your, "We always hated him...I never loved him" responses for someone who will actually believe it.

That's what everyone said about the Republicans in '04 and yet look who won?
Make no mistake, McCain is literally a scumbag, yet the Democrats are still going to lose this election. The Democrats are foolish to have forced Obama down the throats of their party members. Obama has a whopping 160 days of Senate service and it's starting to show. Now you have Russia and Georgia going at it and McCain is directly involved talking to the leaders, but where is Obama? He simply doesn't have the connections.
Basically the Democrats had a big party, all got drunk, and nominated Obama and now they are waking up with hangovers and wondering who this strange guy is in their bed?
If I didn't live in Florida, I wouldn't vote for either one of these guys. But here, my vote actually counts so I may have little choice but to vote for McCain. I simply can't imaging the damage Obama would do with a Democratic Congress. We have already seen what happened with Bush and his same party Congress. We would all be better off with a Clinton like gridlock situation. Funny how government seems to work best when it can't do anything, isn't it?

Obama was a day late in responding because again, he doesn't have the personal relationships already in place.
Ultimately though, this isn't really a deciding issue for me. Owning a business here in the important battle ground state of Florida I have a responsibility to nearly 50 workers to keep them employed. McCain's tax policy is simply leaps and bounds ahead of Obama in this area and since they are virtual clones in the other areas the die is pretty much cast.
So come November I will probably walk up to the Diebold, vote McCain, then immediately vomit. If I still lived in California I would probably just write in Ron Paul or not even vote for POTUS.
