View Full Version : Olympics...Anyone Watching?

So it's that time of the year. Anyone have thoughts on the Olympics.

Personally, I'll only watch soccer, basketball, baseball and possibly volleyball [depending on whether or not the Brazilian girls are still in it ]. I'm more a winter olympics kind of guy.

Oh...thats right....forgot they were on.

Nope.

For one, I only get 2 channels out here. ABC and PBS.
Two, I don't support China in any way shape or form. The only way their communist country survives is the money they make off our capitalist one.
I do not think they should have been rewarded with the olympics. They displaced so many people to prepare for this. The people there may temporarily have some benefits like cleaner air, but I wonder how quickly it will turn back when all of the foreigners are gone.

I think Russia invading Georgia is over shadowing it! Damn Russians! Planned for months no doubt to coincide with the opening of the Olympics!

Maybe we can get China to attack Russia for it?

I generally don't watch because they don't adequately cover the events I would be inclined to watch.

Sure, I look in form time to time, but mostly I just go about my usual business,

I plan on seeing Michael Phelps win another few gold medals, seeing as how he's a Marylander himself.

I like the winter. And I am mad they are in China.

Why? If it's the bad air, I can understand that. But lots of nations that don't have great human rights records have hosted the Olympics. Or is it something else?

Safe bet I would say at this point. He should be a lock on the 200 meter butterfly. And if not, there are two more relay races as well.

Wow, what a way to dominate a swimming relay race, the way it went in the middle was nothing less than awesome and unbelievable.

That said, Michael Phelps = fucking legend.

Did anyone see the synchronized womens diving? The china team was beyond belief; in some of the dives, they literally looked as if only 1 person was diving.

Phelps is a beast. The world records being shattered are just amazing. Breaking a swimming record by 4 seconds when it's a 400M event... that's just crazy.

I agree. He really is showing how great an athlete he is!

On a side note, did you hear about how Spitz is whining over the whole thing?

Personally, I think the world records being shattered have to do with the new swimsuits. Some of them may have been shattered anyway, but not this many.

I did and saw some video clip of him. His remarks showed a complete lack of class.

Swimsuits maybe and a pool design that really minimizes disturbances to the water apparently. But that still doesn't take away from the perfomance we are seeing since all the competitors are seeing the same benefit.

No, I am not saying they are not all performing amazingly... however, you cannot really compare a world record set without the equipment to one set with it. The fact that so many people are beating the world records, not just the winner, but sometimes most of the field, is proof that technology is giving them this edge.

True, but it also speaks of advantages in diet and training that exist now. The whole athletic environment has changed dramatically from what it was 20 years ago. The demands are greater, the pressures are greater and the attention paid is greater too.

And while it is true that records are made to be broken, that one woman swimmer held the world record for what? 15 minutes? She broke it in the first heat and then someone else broke hers in the next heat. You have to love this stuff.

The thing about the pool design is major also. "back in the day" i remember that the middle lanes were considered faster (if memory serves me) because you get more waves on the outside.
