Obama's campaign is slowing down faster than Ted Kennedy's car after hitting Lake Chappaquiddick.

Democratic jitters as Obama heads for Hawaii

Few people are more likely to need a holiday than Barack Obama. Yet as he heads off on Friday for his first week-long break since he launched his presidential bid 19 months ago, Mr Obama is dogged by rising angst about his campaign’s direction.

Although he has run what is widely acclaimed to be one of the most impressive campaigns in years, Democrats live in fear of Mr Obama falling prey to the kinds of accident that derailed predecessors in earlier cycles.

With polls showing him neck-and-neck with John McCain at a stage at which many Democrats expected he would be in the clear lead, they worry about the kind of stray image that helped to defeat John Kerry in 2004.

In a piece of footage endlessly recycled to mock his supposed elitism and even foreignness, Mr Kerry was caught on camera windsurfing off Massachusetts. Since Mr Obama is taking his holiday at a private beach house in Hawaii, surrounded by the secret service, campaign officials worry less about his exposure to the paparazzi. Besides, they say, most Americans will be tuned into the Olympics.

“During the middle of a campaign you are always worried about taking some time off – that’s the nature of the job,” Mr Obama told reporters this week. “But you know I have been going pretty much straight for 18 months now.”

Democrats say that Mr Obama needs to accomplish two critical things on his return next week. First, he must put on a good event to announce the selection of his running mate. Second, his speech at the party convention in Denver must be exceptional.

In contrast to the jittery nerves among Democrats in general, the Obama campaign conveys serene confidence that it will accomplish both. Tad Devine, a Democratic consultant, says: “If he pulls off a good convention, as you would expect him to do, then he will go into the general election with a serious money advantage over John McCain.”

The odds, says Jim Leach, a former Republican congressman and now head of the Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics, are still in Mr Obama’s favour. “This is a candidate who has barely made any serious gaffes in spite of having had no pause since the campaign began,” he said.

As for Mr Obama’s Hawaii trip, many believe he has got his priorities straight. “It has been about 19 months since I saw my grandmother,” he said. “And she is at an age where it’s really important for me to see her. And those little girls need a little love – as does Michelle. So we are going to take the time, all right?”

Obama will now take out the Gore/Kerry playbook and send Barr and Baldwin money. Now that the Clinton problems are resurfacing he needs about a 10% cushion for both disgruntled Hillary supporters and Dem "voters" who cannot or will not register under state US citizenship laws.

The wet-end is in dire straights.
Running tied against a white-haired wrinkly guy who is tied to Bush who everybody hates...not too bad.
What's wrong with the Dem's candidate?

What's wrong with the Dem's candidate?

It's not the candidate as much as it is what comes out of their mouths. It's why libbies have only held the White House for 8 out of the past 28 years (soon to be 8 out of 32).

Democratic jitters as Obama heads for Hawaii

Odd...I don't have any jitters......am I suppose to because this article tells me I should?

......as for Kerry and his wind surfing......you forget Obama's main attraction....his wife and kids. I haven't seen him use them, as in the bike ride...but this is a vacation........pictures will be taken. All I can see is John and Jackie frolicking with their children.......this is going to make McCain look OLD.......nope.... no jitters for me.

I think Senator Obama did say something about think time last week. That's a concept I like a great deal. We might not be in the straits we're in today if Bush had taken some think time. From the results though, that doesn't seem to have been the purpose of all those vacations in Crawford.

I skimmed over the story, which seemed to be just about as full of content as Stoner's posts usually do. Thus, it took only about three seconds to digest.

My signature sums it up. Madison did well following Jefferson's two terms but for pretty much everyone else if the president didn't die in office it has been political suicide to follow a two term president: witness Bush.

Obama went on vacation and according to Rasmussen his numbers really popped. Americans want to vote Dem regardless of race, creed, color, gender or anything else. However Obama is such an arrogant jerk his appearances and ads hurt him. I think this is deliberate on his part.

i don't recall either campaign having any steam to lose... but that's just me... Depends on whether you are talking about going down or going up. I figure the two majors will combine for something like 70% of the vote come November. Nobody is much excited about Barr, Baldwin, Nader and McKissey but I expect at least two will break 5% of the national total. Barr may break 15% simply because Nader and McKissey are too poorly organized and Baldwin turns dissident Dems off even more than Barr does. The auto-brainwashing talking points of the majors are particularly pathetic this time around. This will definitely be a change election.

i don't see as much support for establishment candidates as i see scenarios of monkeys throwing shit against the opposition candidate.. everyone on this site has more to say about the opponent than their own candidate. that speaks volumes about each canidates' "steam".

Simply reducing the turnout for your opponent is about the only move possible when both sides are willing to steal a hot stove and go back to capture the smoke.
