This Wednesday Anglican church's once-a-decade conference held at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury will be the focus of a lot of media attention no doubt. The controversy over gay clergy and female bishops will be the main topic! Many of the Bishops refused to come! This religious organization is the third largest religion in the world! And one of the most diverse, perhaps to diverse for some members. At the center of the controversy, one gay Bishop from the USA and a few female Bishops too.
These issues have cause a great divide in the Church and may not be reconcilable. There is talk of a split!
I know the issues of gay rights have been discussed here in great lengths. Most agree gays should be entitled to the same civil rights as every one. But this is a little different. It's not about gay marriage. It's about do gays have a right to change Church doctrine? Females too. Some Churches in the USA feel it's ok, others consider it a attack.
Where do we draw the lines? If you know your Church teaches against it, why not just go to another Church?
My personal opinion on this matter is these Churches certainly are free to do what ever they want. But should not expect to change the whole established Angelical organization. They should just break away and avoid all this trouble they are causing for so many other Churches and Bishops. It would be like if a Catholic Priest announced he was gay and then expected Rome to change it's rules. Don't work that way. Be a gay Priest, but your no longer Catholic. Now you need to be independent.
