At least that's the breaking news on english.aljazeera.net (no article, just on the ticker). I had heard earlier reports that it was going to be pushed off a few months, so hopefully the south korean agency is wrong.
Edit: North Korea just issued a statement reported 2 minutes ago saying the test was carried out:
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

Well, if they did and it is confirmed, the ball is now in Bush's court.
He stated the U.S. would not allow a nuclear North Korea. Seems North Korea has decided otherwise. And with the problems currently in Iran will we try and fight a 4 front war (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and North Korea)?
Interesting and scary times ahead I think.

You know, I may be dense, but for the life of me I can't understand why Bush doesn't use some diplomacy.
Both Iran and N. Korea want a one on one with Bush. Other than an ego problem........why not just do it? Sure, they are both nuts.......but can't he see the political gain, in the press alone?

His whole "Axis of Evil" speech did nothing but enhance a hatred already felt for the U.S. and our actions in Iraq have made other countries want to develop nuclear weapons FASTER.

Lily, this is the same reason you don't negotiate with kidnappers. If we let these guys drag us into bilateral talks with some blackmail this time what will they blackmail us into next time.
What kind of diplomacy would work with a nutjob like Kim Jong Il?

You also don't back someone in a corner either. They will lash out.

He hasn't been backed into a corner, nothing has been done to Kim Jong Il at all.Â*Â*As a matter of fact we have been trying to continue to holdÂ*Â*the 6 party talks with NK in order to keep the local nations in process as players.

Ok, so since most of us can't agree on causes of this (That's ok, we have differing opinions), how about we talk reactions.
Any ideas on how this may be played out now that it has happened?
His whole "Axis of Evil" speech did nothing but enhance a hatred already felt for the U.S. and our actions in Iraq have made other countries want to develop nuclear weapons FASTER.
Yes........but this madness could end. I've already mentioned in another thread, how this is just going to make every country that we've worked so hard on, now bring their nuclear ambitions right back on track.

First off, boogyman.........you don't know that it would be blackmail. Second off........you don't have much faith in Bush as a diplomat, do you? That's one of the strongest abilities a president can have.
We've lost our power to frighten any one any more. The UN is useless, they've already walked out of the bi-lateral talks because of some (real or imagined) insult.........diplomacy can't possibly hurt. As I said, it will show Bush in a totally different light.

Lily, this is all about what Kim Jong Il can threaten us into and you know it.
The USGS appears to show some seismic activity in the region at Inchon.
The page the graph below came from is here (http://aslwww.cr.usgs.gov/Seismic_Data/heli2.shtml).

Actually I don't........otherwise I wouldn't have posted what I did......so give me some exaples of how he is going to blackmail us.

Well, he could threaten to test a nuke. Oh wait, he already did that.
For all the complaints about how clinton handled it, he sure did a better job of keeping nukes away from north korea than bush did. This is what we wanted to prevent, and this method didn't work. The old method wasn't a permanent solution, but was better than this.

Sorry bout that,
1. But North Korea is dieing on the vine.
2. All we have to do is watch it implode.
3. It has little if any *real* threat to its neighbors.
4. They are in a different league, *Pee Wee League.*
5. This is more of, *What can we get from USA to be good*.
6. *Payday* is coming they think, and soon, from rewards, from America if they lay down their Nuclear weapons.
