On the eve of provincial government elections Georgian officials decided to introduce the new law of lustration. The fact is that currently the Georgia territory is place for hunting former KGB agents. It’s known that most part of victims are from opposition parties. IMO Georgia officials hope to prevent from political career everybody who was concerned with KGB.
However as became clear for me some officials from president administration and some Parliament deputies are the collaborators of foreign intelligence services as well! For example, Georgia Parliament deputy and leader of “United National Movement” Alexander Shalamberidze collaborated with KGB. In addition to it other former KGB agents Maya Nadiradze, David Berdzenishvili and Vaan Bayburt are working in Georgia Parliament. I wonder did president Saakashvili knew about those facts before beginning of his anti spy mission.
It’s the European analysts’ opinion that Saakashvili’s fight against spies (the Russian military men arrest) and Russia accusation in espionage could shake so tenuous peace n the Caucasus. But Europeans don’t need any new conflicts which could expose European peace and economy to danger. And Europeans are engaged in many peacekeeping missions already. No doubts that Europe will not support Georgian officials’ movements because of it disturb main democracy standards - equal rights and freedom of speech!
