Former White House spokesman Tony Snow dies

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former White House press secretary Tony Snow -- who once told reporters "I'm a very lucky guy" -- died at the age of 53 early Saturday after a second battle with cancer.

Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September 14, 2007, and joined CNN in April as a conservative commentator.


President Bush said Saturday that he and first lady Laura Bush were "deeply saddened" by Snow's death.


"The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," the president said in a statement.


"It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day."


Snow's successor, White House press secretary Dana Perino, said, "The White House is so deeply saddened by this loss. He was a great friend and colleague and a fantastic press secretary. And his dear family is in our thoughts and prayers."

I always admired his skills. Lately, his visits on the nightly shows ....and Bill Maher's show were great. Tony fought the good fight until the end. He will be missed. God bless his family.

My feelings exactly. My brother died of colon cancer at about the same age. Its a hard thing for any family. May he rest in peace and may his family find the strength to live without him.

What a truly sad story. Tony was way too young to die.

Tony was a kind man in a profession filled with too many nasty people. I certainly hope the media honors and mourns him the way they did Tim Russert.

I never agreed with him politically, but he was truly likable. I felt some kinship with him because I had a battle with colon cancer at 40. At 73 now, I think I'm cured.

The man was an eternal optimist, a fighter, a pragmatist, a good friend and family member.
I loved that vid of him leaving the WH, with the whole staff giving him a standing O while he pumped his fist in the air, grinning like a boy on Christmas morn..
At that time...he knew he was dying.
To be able to do that...takes a special person.

Not only did Tony show us all how to live but how to die...
Truly a mark of great character.

A Kansas church well-known for its protests at the funerals of fallen American soldiers plans to picket at this week's funeral of former Press Secretary Tony Snow, declaring that Snow is "a very bad monkey" who is "now burning in hell."

"He had a platform, he was given some small talent by his Creator. He was an unfaithful steward, and is now residing in hell," says a schedule on the website of the Westboro Baptist Church.

It would just validate them. Better if everyone who showed up would just turn their backs on them in a totally silent protest. Make them into the non-beings they truely are.

His time as press secretary for Bush was miniscule compared to his job as a journalist. He didn't do bad for Bush either, most of the media respected him.
