SI.com has learned that for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate may sponsor a race car in NASCAR's premier series. According to sources, Barack Obama's campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing's No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3. Details of the agreement are expected to be worked out over the coming days.

A BAM spokesperson has revealed the team will hold a press conference July 23 in Miami to reveal the partnership, currently a proposed one-race deal with an option to continue. Obama will be at the briefing, which will be tied to the "Get Out The Vote" campaign message he spread throughout the 2008 primary season.

While George Bush was prominently featured on Kirk Shelmerdine's No. 72 car in '04, this is the first time a national presidential campaign has actually given its own money to make itself a primary sponsor of a race car. The sport has typically shown itself to be a Republican stronghold, a trend two-time champ Jimmie Johnson recently alluded to when he said he believed John McCain was the candidate of choice for most NASCAR fans this year.

Ken Schrader will drive the entry, a Toyota, at Pocono for BAM, which is outside the top 35 in owner points and must qualify for the race on speed. The team has run just once since Martinsville due to sponsorship concerns, and has just six top-10 finishes in 167 career starts in the Cup series dating back to '02. According to sources, the team will stick with Toyota after making a switch from Dodge back in the spring

Well, the NASCAR crowd is probably the group Obama's weakest among. A winning driver could do a lot for his chances among them. It wouldn't appeal to me one way or another. I'd like it if he sponsored a team in the Tour de France, which is going on right now--but then not a whole lot of Americans follow bike racing.

I can imagine McCain sponsoring a rodeo or a demolition derby! And Cheney's already sponsored his bird hunt. Bob Barr could have a featherweight boxing tournament, while Nader has a moral outrage piss-off.

Most Nascar fans do not like liberals and many do not like Toyoto in the race.

This is nothing but a publicity stunt

I doubt that he does, but he's covering all the bases.

I do, by the way Stewart will leave toyota and Gibbs racing to get back in a chevy.

I believe Toyota gave Gibbs big bucks to switch because Toyota needed his shop.Without Gibbs Toyota still would not be wiining races.

In my opinion Obama makes wise decision.I don't think his sponsoring a car would help him.

NASCAR's BAM Racing team has presented Barack Obama's presidential campaign with a potential sponsorship deal in the Sprint Cup series later this year, but it doesn't look like an Obama car will be burning rubber on the track anytime soon.
BAM team spokesman Rhett Vandiver told The Associated Press on Friday that the team made a sponsorship proposal to the Democratic presidential hopeful's campaign, and has made similar proposals to the campaign of Republican John McCain and at least one third-party candidate.

Late Friday, the Obama campaign said there would be no sponsorship

Obviously not if he thinks sponsoring a Toyota car will ganer him votes. Great news though. Just more money down the drain.

Well what do you know? Maybe someone told him something about NASCAR.

So your anti-Japanese rant was all for nothing.

Actually it was, as Toyota is building more plants here than the big three.

TOYOTA IN NORTH AMERICA

This will be Toyota's eighth assembly plant in North America. The others:

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown produces the Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, and Camry Solara.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC), in Cambridge, Ontario produces the Corolla, Matrix and Lexus RX 350.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) in Princeton produces the Tundra, Sequoia, and Sienna.
New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI), a joint venture with General Motors in Fremont, Calif., produces the Corolla and Tacoma and Pontiac Vibe.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (TMMBC) in Tijuana, Mexico, produces the Tacoma and Tacoma truck beds.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) in San Antonio produces the Tundra.
Beginning in 2008, a new plant in Woodstock, Ontario will produce the RAV4.
Also, this spring Toyota will start producing Camrys at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Ind.
Toyota also has four engine plants in North America:

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia (TMMWV) in Buffalo produces four-cylinder and V6 engines and automatic transmissions.
TMMK produces four-cylinder and V6 engines.
TMMC assembles four-cylinder engines.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL) produces V6 and V8 engines.

I don't care where they assemble them they are still a japanese car company.By building plants here they avoid import taxes.

Ptif started this stupid thread with a misrepresentation, suggesting that Obama was going to sponsor a racing team. That wasn't the story. It was simply offered as an option. Now he's looking for a chance to turn it into a diatribe about Japanese cars. PFFftt:blah:

I doubt you would have posted an equal amount of venom had Obama been considering sponsoring a Dodge or Chevy car instead of a Toyota. Sounded envious to me.

That was the story but I also showed when he changed his mind and said no.I was fair about it.I think I have been fair here.I mentioned it was a toyota and that toyota was not necassarilly liked by fans. You libs have made a big deal about that.

Your right if he had sponsored an american car I would not have mentioned the type. But for a dem to think the nascar fans would support him because he sponsors a car is laughable.

Kyle Busch won the NASCAR event today driving a Toyota.

Sounds like auto envy to me.

Sponsoring a car would be a waste of money for Obama. He would get more bang for his buck if he bought a small Mickey D ice cream cone for everyone in the country.

Notice when Bush was in front on restarts Johnson gave him room. When Johnson was in front on the restart Bush bumped him out of the way because he knew he could not win cleanly. But bush is famous for his dirty tactics. He can't win so he bumps you or wrecks you.

Notice I said Obama was correct in not sponsoring a car.
