Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries."

The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.

Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

What is terrible is the US taking horse off the menu a few years back. Overaged horses and pets from the SPCA would be a wonderful low cost source of protein for America's poor that is going to waste. For shame.

Rabbits and deer? How about those suicidal squirrels that try and cross the road and can never decide which way to turn to ensure their demise

All a matter of taste preference. I am probably the only person on the eastern shore of MD who does not like crab. I shame my boss because I will not eat octopus, escargot, or raw oysters.

Raw oysters taste like that yucky phlegm you cough up when you have bronchitis. I tried em once, to fit in with the folks in my platoon, and kept stifling gagging. Luckily the salads came just when I thought I was really going to lose it. YUCK!!

Don't eat roadkill squirrel brains. They act like lunatics because a Prion(?) is rotting their brain only with different symptoms than madcow or kuru-kuru. So take your kid out in the yard with a BB gun and teach him the right way to kill little furry critters and leave their babies to starve.

Worm burger is supposed to be good. But insects need to be thoroughly cooked especially cockroaches and flies.
