So much for the law of the land in Britian.

The most senior judge in England tonight gave his blessing to the use of sharia law to resolve disputes among Muslims.
Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips said that Islamic legal principles could be employed to deal with family and marital arguments and to regulate finance.
He declared: 'It is possible in this country for those who are entering into a contractual agreement to agree that the agreement shall be governed by a law other than English law.'

Do they know what that entails? OMG. Here come the 'honor killings', vigilante justice, prosecuting rape victims instead of perps......
*shudders*
This is why I don't want to go to Europe anymore. They're getting TOO tolerant over there......

Mia, Boogy, they long had similar Christian and Jewish courts in Canada. It's nothing unusual, it's voluntary, the secular courts can overturn it, and it's only regarding family and other similar types of disputes.
I guess you don't realize what that means, Zo. When it is turned over in any way shape or form to Sharia law, it's no longer tracked by the real government or any other group, so we don't know what really happens.
They tried this in the Netherlands but there were secret honor killings and other heinous things going on unreported, left for the 'Muslim Community' only to know about and deal with (or not).

No matter how you dress this pig up, it is still a pig, Zo. There is no situation where such a law should be able to supercede the law of the land.

Sometimes (too often), that will end up like the FLDS. Those 12 year olds 'volunteer' for their 'marriages'..........you can't overturn something in court if no one will say anything.
Remember the days when families would not report violence against women?
No one was prosecuted, didn't mean it wasn't happening. Same for sex offenses against children.
Families and groups put pressure not to report or cooperate.

In Canada, religious courts where beneath secular courts. They allowed them to do their own thing with willing participants, and as long as no laws where violated. They had not authority over non financial or family matters.

I know how it was applied in Canada and the paranoia over religious courts aren't justified based on that.

So illegal actions occured that criminals engaged in? Unless you have evidence that it was linked to the courts themselves it's meaningless.
No paranoia. Reality.

Sounds exactly like the FLDS problem. On steroids.
Willing my ass. Ask that woman in Pakistan if she was 'willing' to be gang-raped under a twisted 'honor rule' that said she should be. And then kill herself after.

I see you're not actually going to discuss relevant things about this issue and the reach of the mentioned courts, and instead prefer just go on rants about honor killings and other things.

I see that you're going to stick your head in the sand and refuse to educate yourself on what sharia law is and how it works, no matter what country it's in.
Let's you and I agree to disagree on this one.

And you simply see "Shariah" and scream. Did you even bother to read the article?
Ever read a book? That's my final comment to you on this.

from the article:
Well-crafted laws in this country, drawn up to protect both parties including the weak and vulnerable party in matrimonial break-ups, could be compromised.
That's an understatement.......
