'Black national anthem' stirs controversy for city

DENVER - Mayor John Hickenlooper's annual State of the City address may get more attention for what wasn't included than what was.

“I don’t think it’s fair artistic expression,” said Gov. Bill Ritter (D-Colorado) of the incident. He made the comments on The Mike Rosen Show on 850 KOA on Wednesday. At the start of the event Tuesday morning, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

Instead, she performed the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which is also known as the "black national anthem."

When she finished, the audience responded with mild applause. The national anthem was never performed.

Governor Bill Ritter (D-Colorado) discussed the incident on The Mike Rosen Show on 850 KOA on Wednesday morning, calling it "inappropriate."

"I don't think it's fair artistic expression," said Ritter.

Ritter went on to say he felt Marie's actions were "wrong" and "outside the bounds."

"It certainly is operating as a distraction," said Ritter.

Marie told 9NEWS she kept her plans to switch songs quiet until the very last moment. She says only she, her husband and a friend knew she was going to sing something other than the "Star-Spangled Banner."

She says she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" said Marie.

Hickenlooper's staff picked Marie to sing the national anthem. The mayor says he believes Marie did not intend to offend anyone or make a political statement.

When asked if he was offended, Hickenlooper said, "You know I was more confused and I think I was more – what I was, was disappointed and confused and that's why I wanted to talk to her."

"Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1899 and set to music by his brother in 1900.

City Councilman Charlie Brown took to talk radio Tuesday afternoon to criticize the absence of the national anthem at the State of the City proceedings.

"There is no substitute for the national anthem, period," Brown said. "And that's what really bothered me. You know when we fly the flag, the American flag, it's always the highest flag, as it should be. And that didn't come across today, that didn't happen today."

In hindsight, both Brown and Hickenlooper say they should have stopped Marie or began singing themselves.

Marie says if she had the benefit of doing it over, she would sing the same song.

When asked if she would apologize for what happened she said, "No I do not."

Marie has been singing professionally for 10 years.

Brown says he doesn't have a problem with people expressing their views, but he says Marie chose the wrong venue.

Below are the full lyrics to "Lift Ev'ry Voice & Sing"

LIFT EV'RY VOICE AND SING

Also known as "The Black National Anthem"

by James Weldon Johnson

Lift ev'ry voice and sing,

Till earth and heaven ring.

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise,

High as the list'ning skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chast'ning rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,

Have not our weary feet,

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,

Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,

Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;

Thou who has by Thy might,

Led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,

Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee,

Shadowed beneath thy hand,

May we forever stand,

True to our God,

True to our native land.

I've heard the song Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing. I can't imagine how you can sing that to the melody of the Star Spangled Banner without it sounding like crap.

It's all about political correctness.

It has NOTHING to do with Political Correctness. Political Correctness would dictate she should have sung the Star Spangled Banner as is.

It is just a tradition that we have adopted. Since tradition, moral, and pride have changed in this country, why care anymore? Aside from my own personal belief, the belief that they should have stuck to tradition, I believe they have another tradition to uphold that is wholly american; that is freedom.

The freedom to sing what they want in this case.

That's a fuckin' laugh.

That's just apdst's way of saying it's a black thing...

And that's Libbo for, "you're a racist because you criticized something remotely associated to black folks".

:lmao:

But, just to note.. There is nothing in the song to indicate anything "black" about it. Had it been sung by Becky Whitegirl Cheerleader at graduation ceremonies, it'd be lauded as a more innovative rendition!!

Because its sung by a black woman ..its the black national anthem?? Says who?

She says she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" said Marie.

What the fucks the problem? oh yeah... its them black people trying to take over the world, pinky.

For one, I'm pretty tired and very disgusted with hearing our national anthem screached instead of sung. I'd rather she'd ruin her "black national anthem" by runing up and down the scale on one note than to ruin the actual American national anthem with her brand of "singing."

I hope they didn't pay her since she didn't sing what she was hired to sing.

Whatever....

This is just another excuse to bash black people, in general, thread. Start more dumb shit about how they're trying to take over the world pinky ... c-c-c-cause OBAMA!!! Yeah thats the ticket! Obama made her do it. psst... I bet her and Michelle Obama are lesbian lovers too... Ya think? I mean HE's probably gay... so she must be too and since we ALL know they fail to put on a flag pin as they rise from bed every day like all good Republicans DON'T... then this dastardly, offending woman is unpatriotic too. :madlaugh:

:madlaugh: Thats the kind of illogical crap you people are going with this ridiculous FOXNEWS, Karl Rove smear tactic.. GOT to smear any and every black person ... IF they seem like they are stepping out of line, they must be Democrats and therefore... Obama supporters. Right? Gotcha. I've already read enough on the web to see exactly how the smear machine is trying to make this go.

Look... she had an idea.. didn't work.. its a big so what and if Obama was not going to be the next CIC :madlaugh: it would not have even made news. But, those damn uppity KNEEGROWS just won't sit the fuck down and stop being INDIVIDUALISTIC DAMNIT !! Some do dumb shit, like whites. Some are very successful and assimilated. And? So what, they're just people. I'd bet some recording exec loved it and she'll be in a movie next year. Maybe win an Oscar. Ya just never know!!

So but ...for now.. boohoo... everybody on the right has got to weigh in as.... offended. And shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you. OMG!

But, seriously.... all this is really about is rightwing racism. The viciousness of hatred and ongoing fearmongerng coming from the right.... only serves to push them farther and farther out on the fringe of American society WHICH is vastly multiethnic. Like it or not, white people, the great American melting pot is cooking up a LOT more than white people. I oughtta know.. :madlaugh: Get used to it or get left behind.

Oh yeah... what was this thread about? :embarrased:

As much as I find most of what apdst as appalling, he has a point. I would be offended too. This woman was invited to sing the Star Spangled Banner. She didn't do that.

I can guarantee a program was created for this event (There are programs for almost every event) and on this program was this woman and it was listed she was supposed to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

I am an Obama Supporter. And I WOULD BE OFFENDED as well.

If you are invited to do something and you agree to it, then you should do it.

What I have to ask is what was so damn important that this woman HAD to change what she was invited to do, to do what she did?

Why? What is so bad about the Star Spangled Banner that she felt she couldn't sing it (Which she was invited to do) to what she did.

Sue, I respect what you say most of the time, but this time there is no excuse for it. She was invited to something and she didn't. Shame on her. Call it for what it is, shame on her.

Well...I don't LIKE it either. It was a dumb thing to do and not a good time to make a political statement.... It was just dumb.

BUT...before I sent my post.... I did check the web and saw that the right is using this politically.. aimed at the Obama's. Hence my over the top rhetoric.

The whole thing to me just doesn't rate more than a blip on the radar screen.

Well, the song isn't sacred is it? I like to hear the words, the song, feel a swell of pride ect. But, its not like the singer or we listening to a creative rendition are going to hell if its not strictly done .. We aren't in church at a baseball game are we? We aren't in worship of country when listening to it, are we?

Anyway... like I said... this would not even be news if not for the overt racism exibited by the GOP opposition. They picked up on it and are trying to capitalize on it. Simple as that.

Given that the song itself was an old English drinking song and the lyrics were written about a war we lost (the War of 1812), it does not have exactly a regal background.

At least she didn't grab her crotch when she got done singing it...

Actually, I love "Lift Every Voice." We used to sing it at church camp every summer when I was a kid.

There are many interpretations of the Star Spangled Banner. Singing it different isn't the issue. Not singing it at all is.

She decided on her own to do a different song than what she was invited to sing. The fact that she only told her husband and one other, indicates that she probably knew she shouldn't

But the words of the song are a personal statement, not a political one. If she had done all the verses, they might have had even more problems with the mention of God though.

It was a stupid mistake to make. But here is one of my all time favorite performances of it....

Those females were attempting to honor the country by singing its national anthem.

This woman was on a black power agenda and sang the "black" national anthem in order to make some political point at a time where the country is to be honored.

She is despicable in every sense of the word. We see this same type of disrespect when protesters show up at fallen soldiers' funerals.

No need to ask what party they are registered with, I feel that we already know

Equating Rev Phelps and this singer is pretty despicable in and of itself. Needless to say she won't get a forum like this again but she made her play and she'll have to live with it. It doesn't even compare to what the Phelps people do but I guess if you are not marching in lockstep with the Bush crowd you leave yourself open to all kinds of smears.
