View Full Version : Texas Republican Racists Strike Again

We all know that those good-ole-boy racists left the Democratic Party after the Democrats got serious about actually enforcing civil rights laws and here's where they wound up: in the Texas GOP.

Expect the Republican party to do absolutely nothing about the racists in its own midst. The national Republican party in Washington has contacts all the time with its state parties. I'm sure there's money involved, and you'd better believe that when John McCain visits the states, he meets with local party officials. At what point do we hold John McCain responsible for fraternizing with racists? You don't see John McCain ever saying that he's no longer going to meet with, fundraise with, any state parties that promote or tolerate racism (like the folks in NC and TN). All McCain and that national party does is say "gosh, that's so bad, stop that now." McCain and the GOP have the power to punish the racists in their midst. So when will they? Oh, and for all of you in the media who will of course say that this has nothing to do with the GOP: What would you say if racist pins were being handed out at the Democratic National Convention?

The media and the rightwing blogosphere would go ballistic if racist material was handed out or sold at the DNC convention in Denver. (http://www.americablog.com/2008/06/gop-state-convention-in-texas-if-obama.html) Never fear. This all took place in Houston last weekend at the GOP State convention. Houston, we have a problem. A serious problem.

Republican Party of Texas to Donate Proceeds
from Disgraced Vendor

Sends Message that Bigotry Will Not Be Tolerated

Austin - The Republican Party of Texas on Wednesday announced it will donate the proceeds from a vendor who attempted to sell a disgracefully insensitive button during the just completed 2008 Republican State Convention in Houston. The vendor RepublicanMarket.com is a Florida based outlet who sells political paraphernalia via the internet and at state conventions all over the nation.

“This vendor need not apply to another Texas G.O.P. State Convention. The proceeds from their booth space will be donated to charity. We will tolerate nor profit from bigotry,” said Hans Klingler, Texas G.O.P. Spokesman.

Dallas Morning News Journalist Christy Hoppe appropriately brought the issue to the attention of R.P.T. officials on Tuesday. R.P.T. officials will be alerting the vendor today via letter about their intent and suggesting they clean up their act.

“Our state convention was energetic, unifying and positive. We will not allow any dishonor to be brought on our hardworking grassroots leaders by the actions of a misguided few. The Republican Party of Texas is proud of its principles, record and diversity,” Klingler continued.

Puts the smackdown on that story rather quickly.

Boogy, are you saying that the Republican Party had a vendor set up a booth and had absolutely no idea what they were selling the entire time, even though people were wearing the buttons?

I keep forgetting that we are all racists, Zo. Thanks for reminding me.

If a vendor shows up with a bunch of merchandise and there are some objectionable items there I can see where it would be hard to catch, and since the vendor was exposed the party has dealt with them quickly.

Boogy, are you sitting down...take a deep breath and grab ahold of something...I AGREE with you on this one.

Anyone who's ever run a convention, be it Star Trek or political, knows that you don't vet every vendor that arrives. You might look at the name, if it's I Hate Blacks you might react, but not if it were IHB inc. You cannot control everything.

I agree with Boogy that the Vendor has been dealt with and the GOP did the right thing. I will add, so Boogy doesn't have a heart attack from disbelief, that had the roles been reversed, i.e. a vendor at a Dem run thing did something racially idiotic, Limbaugh-FauxNews-O'Reilly and others would have run with it for DAYS!

Thank goodness responsible Dems only reported it and moved on...

No biggie, that's what I'm here for! ;)

I just find it hard to believe that no one brought it to their attention during the event, or that no one of authority noticed it themselves.

Here you are calling in to question peoples attention and character, acting suprised when people didn't catch a problem, when any other time you are claiming people are helpless and everything should be regulated with force to prevent people being responsible for their actions, by placing the onus on government for outlawing bad choices.

You confuse me Zo..... ;)

I'm finding that hard to believe as well.

It's refreshing to see that the party itself stepped in after other unseemly incidents in other states went untouched. It doesn't change the fact that this sentiment exists in the GOP. It just nudges it out of the spotlight for the time being. The good-ole-boy club has been thru this before. They get it.
