One in ten Americans struggle with poverty
The U.S. is currently being hit hard with high global fuel prices and rising inflation. But while some 28 million people there rely on help to put food on the table the government is not moving quickly enough to tackle the problem.
Rafael Blanco, an immigrant from El Salvador, lives in a homeless shelter. He says charity is what keeps him alive.
”I would like to tell President Bush that everything is more expensive, especially food. People who live under the bridges have nothing to eat,” says Rafael.
But Rafael is not the only one for whom life has turned into a daily struggle. 28 million Americans have turned to the government to help them put food on their tables. The number of people claiming food stamps has surpassed the record set in 1994.
The worst hit are turning to churches and food banks.
“We are serving a lot more people. One thing we are finding is that clients can't make it to the end of the month,” says Ted Pringle, Director of Food and Clothing, Washington.
And Alice, the single mother of five, is one of them. With no fixed income she says feeding her family has become a challenge. Her friends and family don't know she's turned to charity, but she is not ashamed of it.
”Everyone needs help once in a while to help you get on your feet,” says Alice.
Most people have to make radical changes to their diets in order to make ends meet. Evette Davis doesn't have a job and lives on her own. She says she can only afford to buy the things most necessary to keep her from starving
“I try to buy fruit and to stay away from meats as they are very expensive. I am considering becoming a vegetarian,” says Evette.
But while demand to feed the hungry has gone up, donations are dwindling.
Rising gas prices have made it more expensive to deliver food to pantries. In the first three months of the year, food costs jumped 5 percent.
And as Americans struggle with rising inflation, lawmakers are not moving quick enough.
One possible solution is to increase benefits to those most in need by up to 15 percent. But the idea, initially part of President Bush's economic stimulus plan, was dropped.
Advocates hope things will change, but until than poor Americans will have to handle it on their own.

Very well may be. Russia is still recovering from the Soviet/government-controlled type of economy.
Now... do you have anything to say about hungry Americans and what US government is doing to help them?

A democrat will help, so will less dependence on oil by using cleaner and renewable fuels.
Also, I can't say that I don't like the idea of people turning vegetarian, regardless of the reason.

I am sorry. I didn't get this. How can cleaner and renewable fuels help to feed Americans?

Why would you say something silly like that?
The question is not about MEAT, but about absence or lack of ANY food.

The problem with oil is wrecking havoc on the American economy. It's not the only problem, but it's a significant one.
Why would you say something silly like that?
The question is not about MEAT, but about absence or lack of ANY food.
Meat uses up more land, resources and fuel, so it is about meat. And, due to cruelty issues, I'll always find meat to be important. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

This whole post is entirely false, sorry but I guess you would have to live in America to know that. Also, America doesn't need food poisoning or sars, im sure we can get all the food we need from other people.

True rage:

Most people? Keep from starving? I don't think so. Missing a meal or two is not nearly the same as "keep from starving". And it's not even close to "most people".

I call this stat bogus
We have spent 6.4 trillion dollars on the war on poverty the last 40+ years
There is no way that the rates are still the same or that poverty exists here at all

I hope that's sarcasm

Though the difference between u.s. and russia would be much starker if Russians and Americans were held to the same standard of poverty.

Here were the first 30 years of success
http://www.heritage.org/Research/religion/EM364.cfm
We are more successful as of late due to a change in the system. We no longer subsidize fatherlessness as of 1996.
The GOP in 1994 did wonderful things throughout in terms of increasing efficiency and making people work there way out of poverty. Clinton signing the bill into action was in my opinion one of the shining moments of our presidency.
recent success was not LBJ Carter success, it has come through giving people incentive to produce
6 trillion dollars did not fix poverty, it could have been drawn back much sooner if we wouldn't have subsidized non work to such a great extent for so long.
Most people have to make radical changes to their diets in order to make ends meet. Evette Davis doesn't have a job and lives on her own. She says she can only afford to buy the things most necessary to keep her from starving
Most people do that to loose weight. I know I do :D

How can anyone keep a straight face while reading tripe such as that story?
There are always going to be "poor" folks in ANY economy. But "poor" is a relative term, is it not? Poor in the U.S. is nothing like poor in say, Zimbabwe.
I find myself wishing gubmint house would do NOTHING about poor people. I don't remember seeing a section in the original Constitution that said anything about gubmint being responsible for poor people.

Americans had been brainwashed by official propaganda into thinking that USA#1! and that they live in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, so they cannot except the fact that there are tens of millions of poor and hungry people in America.
USA IS OK they like to say.... It's even difficult to discuss any issue with Americans seriously. When I post some info about real life they respond with Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha or twist info in such a way to make it look like its nothing, or just try to change a topic....
Well............
One day American people will wake up from their Hollywood day dreams and rosy CNN reports.....

Perhaps Mr. Rafael Blanco, an immigrant from El Salvador should take his ass back to El Salvador instead of complaining about how U.S. taxpayers aren't giving him a good enough free ride.........:unreal:

Get a job.
A democrat will help, so will less dependence on oil by using cleaner and renewable fuels.
The current alternative fuel solutions will cause the food market to go through the roof.
As long as there are handouts available, and people who feel enititled to recieve those handouts, there will be a disproportional amount of people living below the poverty line.

That's what I'm talking about.
As long as there are abundant government handouts, there will be an abundance of people living below the poverty line. I'm going to get mine, after Obama get's elected and kills my business.

America has a problem keeping people out of the country who do not follow the legal process to permanently come here.
Is this consistent with a non-successful country December?
Now... do you have anything to say about hungry Americans and what US government is doing to help them?
Maybe you should read your own article, December.
The number of people claiming food stamps has surpassed the record set in 1994
Better yet, maybe you should stop being a troll.
Do you hate America December, because, deep in your heart you know Russia sucks and you're envious?
He lives in the U.S. I guess in the schools he went to (since everything in the U.S is struggling, why not our education hm?), they forgot to teach about things like the cold war, Stalin, and Russia all together.
