Tatum O'Neal says drug arrest `saved' her

NEW YORK (AP) — Tatum O'Neal told a newspaper columnist she is grateful to the New York City police officers who busted her for cocaine and saved her from herself.

"I'm still sober!" the 44-year-old actress told New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser in a phone call shortly after being released from custody Monday.

"Just when I was about to change that and wreck my life, the cops came and saved me! I was saved by the bell, by the guys in the Seventh Precinct."

O'Neal is due back in court July 28 to face a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.

She was arrested Sunday night during a routine drug sweep in her Lower East Side neighborhood. Police said they found two bags of cocaine in her pants pocket.

O'Neal, the daughter of Ryan O'Neal and ex-wife of John McEnroe, has publicly chronicled her struggles with heroin and cocaine addiction. She said she has been sober in recent months, going to 12-step recovery meetings every day.

She told Peyser she had sought out drugs Sunday evening because she was sad about the death of her 16-year-old Scottish terrier — but didn't take the drugs. She said she still hoped to celebrate a year of sobriety July 10.

"I couldn't get out of it. I was going to my psychiatrist. I was doing everything I could do. ... One day, I'm walking aimlessly. I found myself doing the wrong thing," she said.

O'Neal told Peyser spending 18 hours behind bars wasn't bad.

"I slept on a mattress with a couple of ladies because I was tired. ... And I thought the thing that was cool about New York, no special treatment. No special cell. It wasn't that horrible. I think it's worse for the people that don't have a lawyer to get them out."

O'Neal won a best supporting actress Oscar at 10 for 1973's "Paper Moon," becoming the youngest person ever to win an Academy Award.

Her career later foundered, but she revived it in recent years. She has a recurring role as the boozy Maggie Gavin in FX cable channel's drama "Rescue Me," now in production for its fifth and sixth seasons.

She detailed her troubles with drugs in a 2004 memoir, "A Paper Life."

Still pretty good looking for being a 44 year old crack user..

Nancy Grace is so weird sometimes. She won't shut up about Hogan putting his friend in the hospital due to drunk drag-racing. She places no responsibility on the friend who was drinking himself and willingly got into he car knowing the purpose, and failed to put on a seat belt.

But she speaks with such compassion about Tatum.

You'd think someone with that much money would go with more expensive drugs than crack. Weird.

Nancy Grace is an idiot and has no sense of journalistic responsibility, discretion or integrity. The last straw was her pronouncement that the Duke lacrosse team was guilty of rape on the first day charges were filed and subsequently not apologizing for attempting to crucify the team on TV. Hell, she didn't even show up to work on the day files were dropped, a fill-in hosted her show. I cannot stand that woman. She also, during her career as an attorney, proved herself to be a liar and a fraud. LINK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_grace)

yes.. I will say there are times I have quite a different view on things vs Nancy Grace's view.
Sometimes she is very opinionated on an issue I may not feel is much of an issue or atleast feel "more to the story" should be brought forth before I can condemn as radically intense as she does.

Nancy Grace has proven herself to be good in that dept.

I like watching her still..

Cronic, there are people whom I don't like whom I watch for entertainment. Then there are people who I dislike so much, looking at them gets me angry. Keith Olbermann and Nancy Grace are two of those people.

I still like her. I disagreed with her on last night's episode, but the other viewpoints were fully expressed, and to me she was entertaining in her idiocy over Hogan's friend.

An attorney was asked if Hogan had any responsibility for not making sure his friend buckled up. He said some, but not complete. The friend was also responsible for himself.

She was all 'that would be a YES, thank you' in her snotty little tone. She was totally wrong, but I still got the truth from the other guy, and like I said it was funny.

Anyone with a modicum of intelligence can sift through her interpretation and take just the facts of whatever subject, one thing I like is how long she spends on a subject, and the variety of legal analysis from so many people.

Which one is it.......she was sad about her dog dying, or she was researching a role?

Either way.......she was GREAT as Maggie in Rescue me. (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/2008/06/03/drug-charge-tatum-o-neal-told-cops-she-was-researching-for-role-86908-20593246/)

Drug charge Tatum O'Neal told cops she was researching for role
Jun 3 2008 By Joanne Curran

ACTRESS Tatum O'Neal claimed she was researching a role as a junkie when she
was caught buying crack cocaine.

The 44-year-old actress - who was just 10 when she won an Oscar for Paper
Moon - was arrested by officers in New York.

They said O'Neal, who has battled drug addiction in the past but claims to
have been clean since 1996, asked them: "Do you know who I am?"

She then allegedly said: "I'm researching a part. I'm doing this for a part
as a junkie."

O'Neal, the ex-wife of tennis ace John McEnroe, was also said to have had a
crack pipe on her when she was arrested at 7.30pm on Sunday near her home in
Manhattan.

And she reportedly even spoke to the arresting officers about her addiction
problems, insisting that the alleged buy was a one-off.

The source said: "She said she'd been clean for two years and that she'd
just come out today."

And the source claimed she begged detectives: "Can't we just forget about
this?"

yano honestly.. I watched paper moon not to long back.. and I also remember commenting on while watching the show, Tatum smoking the cigarettes as a young girl.

Some of the clips in the movie it looked like she was really inhaling..

anyways.. I remember us talking about her up bringing.. I remember mentioning to my friend that her daddy was quite the party animal and I bet she grew up around booze and drugs.

seems maybe I was right?
