A local man has won $1 million from a scratch-off ticket in the Ohio Lottery.
According to lottery officials, Robert Sharp of Defiance purchased a Stacks of Cash instant lottery ticket for $10 at the Evansport Carryout. He won the top prize of $50,000 a year for the next 20 years.
Sharp could not be reached for comment.
Sharp, who filed his claim in the Toledo lottery office on Friday, chose the cash option. After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, he will receive a check for $345,000.
An Ohio Lottery spokesman explained that when a winner decides to take the cash option, the winning amount is reduced by half, or $500,000 in this case. She said the $500,000 is the amount of money the lottery would have placed in a 26-year annuity if the winner had chosen to take a yearly payment of $50,000 instead of the cash option.
She said federal taxes from the $500,000 are 25 percent or $125,000 and state taxes are 6 percent or $30,000, thus leaving the winner with $345,000.
The carryout is owned by Robin Brownlee, who will receive a $10,000 bonus payment for selling the winning ticket.
Brownlee said, "This has been very exciting. The clerks and I are glad someone local was able to cash in a big winning ticket. We are happy we were able to provide the opportunity."
Brownlee noted that once word gets out about the winning ticket, she believes the carryout will be busier.

I buy tickets there maybe once a week.. never the instants tho..

I realize 345,000 is alot of cash but still.. I think.. wow.. he won a million.. and all he gets is 345,000...lol

Thats bizarre. I don't know what's better though, the $345k or $50k a year though, the $50k won't be worth that much in 10-15 years anyway.
