I want to applaud the Pope for speaking his mind. If Muslim around the world get upset thats ok . Its ok to disagree but that does not make the Pope wrong. I am a Catholic and I think its about time other religious leaders start speaking about the senseless killings that are being committed in the "name of islam". God bless the Pope and God bless the USA!

Sorry bout that,
1. But I happen to be Catholic too, and am in total agreement with you dsolis.
2. Its a good thing when The Pope speaks out.
3. And very instructive to those he directs his words to.
4. If their response is to do evil and do inhuman things, those he spoke of prove his point.
5. Welcome to the War of Words, here on DF.

That would work, if that's what he said, but he didn't speak out about the senseless killings.

"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".
The last part dealing with the sword is not a clarification, simply an example. To say everything Muhammad brought, and I assume the emperor meant by extension Islam, is evil and inhumane is ridiculous. Even moreso when taken in the context of the time the emperor uttered it.
But, if you think the pope was "speaking his mind", then isn't he a coward for framing it as a the opinion of someone else, not himself? The apology for offending muslims and stating that the interpretation does not, in any way, reflect his intentions, makes him a coward even moreso. Again, that's if you think he meant to say what you think he did.
