Thought this was an interesting comparison. It sort of illustrates how politics generates media attention...

I for one am happy to see that only 4,000 Americans died in Iraq. It's such a trivial amount and we really shouldn't give a damn, as you have pointed out.

And it's not like any of those suicides could have anything to do with the war. All the soldiers that return that aren't in boxes are happy joyful lads all the time.

Is THAT what I pointed out? Interesting take...Cynical, but interesting.

I'd love to see the penny stack representing "Americans killed by terrorist action in last 20 years". Not a large stack, I promise you.

Doesn't stop my fellow Americans from being terrified though, does it?

Great point, and of course, the MISSING INFORMATION that would REALLY put the Iraq War stack into its actual perspective NorthEastCynic!

I wonder how big that stack would be if we measured the number of Iraqis killed since the start of the war.

LOL! The usual suspects all have the usual rhetoric...totally missing the significance.

Which is?

Which is?

I think he already said it. That the American deaths in Iraq are meaningless because it's only about 4000 that have died.

LOL! The usual suspects all have the usual rhetoric...totally missing the significance.First, I'm honored to be a 'usual suspect'. Second, there is no point to the cute little penny display. None. There is no comparison here to be made. American soldiers were ordered to go overseas unnecessarily and as a result, 4,000 died. That is a tragedy, period.

Suicide is rising among our troops.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Every day, five U.S. soldiers try to kill themselves. Before the Iraq war began, that figure was less than one suicide attempt a day.

The dramatic increase is revealed in new U.S. Army figures, which show 2,100 soldiers tried to commit suicide in 2007.
"Suicide attempts are rising and have risen over the last five years," said Col. Elspeth Cameron-Ritchie, an Army psychiatrist.

Hmm...

I see pennies.

Try laying down a stack of hundred dollar bills to see how much the politically well-connected companies have made off those four pennies in Iraq.

Probably taller than the Burj of Dubai:

the irony

So what if someone presented the following choice. In Baghdad you'd face the same risks that a normal soldier faces, but you couldn't help or be an actual soldier. Essentially you're simply facing the risks of Baghdad. Now if you had the option of spending a month in baghdad, and getting paid $5,000, or spending a month in Detroit, and paying $5,000, which would you choose?

If you're in to statistics...you'd better choose Baghdad. I've been to Detroit... Not good!

People don't strap bombs to children in Detroit, do they?

lol.. well,, I have never been to bagdad. but.. I'm not to scared when I go to Detroit..
I love Detroit..

Wish I could live there.. Then I wouldn't have to travel 3 + hours when I wanna go there all the time.

so lets see.. Detroit = a possible car jacking/shooting..
or
Bagdad = my head cut off
I have noticed they like to cut American peoples heads of there. ( Thank you Mr. Bush )

Yea.. I'll stick with Detroit..lol

I'd rather go to a ghetto area in D.C. or Baltimore. At least there everything doesn't explode via car bomb or IED. And it's not a desert there either.

Maybe the point here could be that with so many budget cuts, the state of mental health care is in bad shape and needs to be worked on.

And a few months back, he was going to go back for another round of photo-ops - and the military wouldn't let him because its no longer safe enough for even THAT.
