FIRST TEST DRIVER: Behind the wheel of the electric Tesla Roadster, powered by mobile phone batteries
By ROSIE BOYCOTT 16th May 2008

As sleek, black and poised as a panther, the car that glides to a halt in front of me on the service station forecourt looks exactly the kind of supercharged ego-booster that Jeremy Clarkson would be itching to drive.

He wouldn't be disappointed. This little beauty will go from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds, making it faster off the mark than a Lotus and almost on a par with a Ferrari.

Ain't we lucky that mobile phones are pretty commonplace. It's too bad they'd be pretty expensive to put into cars.

Finally!! The first and only "green" car I would actually want to own. How long before it's reasonably affordable, though?

I'd have liked for the model they showed to be a Toyota Corolla.

HOW FAST WILL IT GO? Top speed is electronically governed to 80 mph, ostensibly for safety reasons. However, the EV1 is capable of much more. A test car without the governor has done 183 mph. It's QUICK! 0-30 in 3 seconds, 0-60 in 8 seconds.

The EV 1, destroyed by GM in 2003 was affordable, fast and all electric. GM refused to sell them. They only leased them and then took them all away and crushed them.
