I'm new here ... my name is M.B. and since I am 18 years old and since I will be voting for the first time this November I joined this forum to become more informed about American politics. I used to be pretty knowledgeable about this kind of stuff but I've been neglecting reading the newspapers lately ...

I think this election is really going to define our country, and I'm still unsure of who I am going to vote for. All candidates aren't very good, unless someone proves me otherwise.

I'm going to UMass Amherst next year as a freshman, and I want to become a poet/writer/journalist/anything involving writing. My actual degree will be in journalism unless I change my mind (and I probably will).

I speak a little bit of German.

I like heavy metal.

I think my generation sucks.

Actually, in many parts of Hungary German is the most predominantly spoken language.

As for the "ALOHA," well, it sounded better then "HEY".... :(

Just kidding!

So long as you remember to come with your thick skin, a chip on your shoulder, and a grain of salt, you should enjoy yourself here.

Aloha from Hawaii.

Are you registered to vote?

If you vote, my opinion is that you will be voting for Obama.

Not that I support his candidacy, but that's who I imagine a Massachusetts teen will support.

Writing is something you do... not something you're gonna do. This is as good a place as any to write.

I can't stand heavy metal, but I am your grandpa who likes the Beatles.

German is good, stay with it.

Your generation? Destined for greatness, in contrast to those slackers, the Xers... Us Boomers are so full of ourselves... :dork:

Now that's not really an opinion, rather an assumption. I'm not sure who I am voting for, but I am leaning heavily against Obama, actually. Here in Massachusetts people get worked up in a lather about him ... his fans and supporters quite frankly scare me with their lack of knowledge about current events and politics. But they know how to echo the word "change" as if it bears any meaning.

My generation is spoiled, entitled and ignorant, for the most part. All of my peers seem entirely motivated by superficial issues - it's funny to see how perfectly corporations have bred so many loyal fledgling consumers that truly believe there is meaning to life through buying shit ...

And how else do you explain reality TV? I mean come on, that mode of entertainment alone is enough to discredit an entire generation of greatness ...

Out in Western Mass [where, sadly I live when I'm not at school], people love Obama...They also have no idea what he stands for.

Now now, Pat. Just because she's from Mass, and young enough to be your Great Grandaughter, doesn't mean she's already coopted by the Left. There are a few "Red-state" Republicans in southern Mass, and a few of them are Next-Gen'rs.

I think the State keeps a few on display at Franklin Park Zoo also. I think we made the "Endangered Species" list again.

You are pretty much correct, in that they all have much to be desired...I recommend you take a close look at platforms, and compare it to those things you feel may fix the mess we are in as a country.

Welcome hf to the mix, I'm from Ohio.

I think this is a good place for you to get informed of, or better learn about your candidates running for office, as long as you stay objective and believe more in fact then conjecture.

I think this election is really going to define our country, and I'm still unsure of who I am going to vote for. All candidates aren't very good, unless someone proves me otherwise.

I think your off to a good start, as I agree all of our candidates running for office aren't the best out of the box.
But as far as defining the country... I think thats been done... our current CIC has already and unfortunately "defined" our country to the rest of the world and It would take a miracle president to ever come close now to "re-defining" our nation.
I think its certain also that another republican president will only "build on" to the "defining" GWB has already mastered!

I like heavy metal.

I love music..
I like some heavy metal.

I grew up on pink Floyd and aerosmith and kiss and bob segur and more. That stuff was our heavy metal in the late 60's and 70's.

I like it all now tho.. country.. rock... alternative... even some rap.

If its got a good beat and sound.. I like it

I think my generation sucks.

I think your generation has alot more hurdles in life then my generation had and other generations going back for a longggggg time.

My daughter is 21 and I worry so much about her... I wish your generation luck friend.. lots of it.. get the best education you can get and my final last piece of advice... if you do nothing else.. do this...

Save your money...
Stick it in your sock drawer and horde as long as you can.

I agree that Bush has pretty much destroyed America's reputation. I used to support him, ironically, until the war in Iraq. I still feel like I can never get the straight story on Iraq - how the HELL did we justify invading that country?

I think the biggest hurdle for my generation is the moral deterioration of our culture. You should see some of the parties I've been to. I mean, you should really see some of the parties I've been to. Kids do the dumbest and most harmful shit when they're with their friends.

To be honest I've registered on a lot of forums online but all of them were dissapointing because it seems like some people just want to fight and fling insults instead of talking intelligently ... I am open-minded to everyone's opinion, and I can tell most people here can respect that. I like it here!

Educate me!! Think of me as your malleable piece of political clay! OK, maybe I'm not a lump of clay, but I've been seriously questioning some of my political views lately and I am in need of some convincing in order to retain my faith in this nation ....

Welcome Hungarian Flower! Lesson one: Keep a healthy dose of skepticism in reserve when someone here says they want to "educate" you....The Internet is a great resource for research....but this forum, and the zillion others like it aren't about research...they are mostly about people who want to persuade others to accept their viewpoints...most of which are agenda driven. It's a good place to get a grin or two, (even express your opinion) but hardly a place to get "educated."

You sound like a cool chick, welcome to DF. Don't stop questioning your views, that is when you become a spoon fed parrot. There are some here who will try to tell you what you are, invariable it's insulting, I'm an america hating asshole who only pretends to be a nice guy who loves his country. Who knew!

I despise reality TV too, even the good ones generally drive me from the room when my g/f watches them (top chef, designing.. something).

It amazes me the issues people vote on. You can't call them stupid, atleast that's what the tests say, willfully ignorant is what they are. The 10, 20, 30 year plan for america is not even shared with the voters. We vote on myopic policy and personal issues without regard for the icebergs. Simply amazing!
