Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm. But here is the logic of picking Huckabee:

1) He is a great campaigner and communicator who could both shore up support in the South among social conservatives (Huckabee is a former Baptist minister) and appeal to working-class voters in the critical "Big 10" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

2) As any pollster knows, voters search for candidates who "care about people like me," and Huckabee would probably score a lot higher on that quality than millionaire investor Mitt Romney. Plus, given all the turmoil on Wall Street, 2008 would seem to be a bad year to pick a former investment banker for veep.

3) Economic conservatives and supply-siders may balk, but the threat of four years of Obamanomics and higher investment, income, and corporate taxes might be enough to keep them on board.

Let me add that a top Republican political strategist told me about a month ago that he also believed Huckabee to be the leading veep contender.

The article is. The video isn't, but I'm not sure who the girl is.

Huckabee would be a bad choice. The only reason he'd go with Huckabee is if he thinks he has to lock up the Christian vote but Huckabee won't energize the Christian base as much as McCain would hope for by picking him.

Crist makes much more sense to me. Crist locks up Florida.

I still don't understand why Kasich isn't being mentioned. He would give McCain a boost in Ohio more than anyone if that is what he's worried about.

From a strategy standpoint I don't see where Huckabee helps McCain. McCain is going to win the southern states. What he needs to win is Big 10 Country (I like that phrase). I don't think Huckabee does that. The election is whoever gets 2/3 of Ohio, Penn and Florida.

Right now I say McCain has Florida, Obama Penn and Ohio is up in the air. Ohio went almost all Democrat 2 years ago but I don't think we're as blue as we were then. The Democrats haven't done much to "Save" Ohio so far. Plus they've been rattled in controversy with the Attorney General.

Now that Huckabee made the offensive joke about Obama being aimed at with a gun, I wonder if McCain might try to find someone else. But then again, McCain doesn't mind surrounding himself with offensive people. He has Hagee (Catholic church = whore of Babylon), Parsley (US founded to wipe out Islam), now he has Huckabee (Obama hit the floor because someone pointed a gun at him).

Look at it this way: would you prefer it if McCain wanted Mr. 9/11 as his VP?

I think he should pick Rudy as his VP. That way he'll look like a straight-shooting, calm-tempered, reasonable candidate. He'll also be kept in the best of health by America's best doctors just to keep Rudy on the sidelines.

It worked for Nixon with Agnew.
It worked for Bush with Quayle.
It worked for Bush with Cheney.

Why not Rudy?

Huckabee has a 0 percent chance at becoming VP. He would help McCain's numbers in southern and midwestern states that he is going to already win.

I wouldn't count on all the southern states to stay in the GOP column this time around. A good VP may help some but it rarely changes the Electoral College count.
