Anyone else think that looks like the skyline of Atlantis from SGA? Well that's a real city in the United Arab Emirates called Dubai (of the emirate Dubai). Or it will be by the end of 2008 (this year to put it in perspective) or the start of 2009 at any rate.
This is a site telling the city's story. (http://www.dubai-architecture.info/DUB-GAL1.htm)
To give you an idea how fast the city has grown, at the end of the Cold War in 1990, Dubai looked like This:

So much for the Arab stereotype of being medieval level savages, at least in their case. I can only imagine what the city will be like in 2018. :ponder:

If that is the building I am thinking of they are claiming it will be a mile high. After talking with some civil engineers their response was that it couldn't be done right now with today's technology in building or that if it was built, they wouldn't want to work in it due to instability that the building could have.

What are you thinking?
If it's Sky City, that's Japan's dream.

Yep it is the one I am thinking of, here is a good youtube video on it. It isn't going to be a mile high, but it going to be over 1/2 mile high (about 700 meters).

Here is also a wikipedia page that has information on it.

Ya, they say it'll be 163 years before that happens. But that's Tokyo, not Dubai.

I wouldn't go up in there anyway, I can't stand high heights.

I'd love to see the 7 star hotel they have. Only one is the world. The World looks cool as well.

That is the place all the worlds multi-national headquarters end up going, after they are chased out of high tax areas.
I am betting it won't be very populated, just a lot of tax necessary residences and buildings to qualify as "headquarters" for tax puposes, but I could be wrong.

But the point of this city is that oil in a moot point economically. They can stop selling oil right now and would only lose some spending money, still having what they need to not just survive, but prosper.

The tower might stay above water...before the water gets at the foundation, assuming all the melted ice and water makes it that high.
