McCain clarifies remark about oil, Iraq war
Says he meant the first Gulf conflict involved U.S. energy policy

updated 2 hours, 30 minutes ago
PHOENIX - Republican John McCain was forced to clarify his comments Friday
suggesting the Iraq war involved U.S. reliance on foreign oil. He said he
was talking about the first Gulf War and not the current conflict.

At issue was a comment he made at a town hall-style meeting Friday morning
in Denver.

"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about,
which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will
prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict
again in the Middle East," McCain said.

The expected GOP nominee sought to clarify his comments later, after his
campaign plane landed in Phoenix. He said he didn't mean the U.S. went to
war in Iraq five years ago over oil.

"No, no, I was talking about that we had fought the Gulf War for several
reasons," McCain told reporters.

One reason was Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, he said. "But also we
didn't want him to have control over the oil, and that part of the world is
critical to us because of our dependency on foreign oil, and it's more
important than any other part of the world," he said.

"If the word 'again' was misconstrued, I want us to remove our dependency on
foreign oil for national security reasons, and that's all I mean," McCain
said.

"The Congressional Record is very clear: I said we went to war in Iraq
because of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

It was the second time in two days that McCain had to clarify his comments.
On Thursday, he backed off his assertion that pork-barrel spending led to
last year's deadly bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

Of course he does, he doesn't want to be a flip flopper and to some retards he might appear not to be.

I don't see it as much as flip-flopping.......I see it more as senility.

I agree with this. Hopefully his energy program includes drilling in the BAKKEN (http://www.energyandcapital.com/articles/bakken-oil-formation/578) and in ANWAR. Creating a national refined formulation so we can mass refine gas, people in California don't need a different gas formulation than people in Florida. We're never going to get more refineries so we need one mass produced formulation. I don't care if it's the heaviest additive, most expensive and cleanest gas, if it's mass produced it will be cheaper. Hopefully he'll also consider making the majority of Ethanoll out of sawgrass instead of corn.

We also need to bring diesel cars to America. Yes it cost more, but they're cheaper and get better gas mileage than the current hybrids.

"If the word 'again' was misconstrued, I want us to remove our dependency on
foreign oil for national security reasons, and that's all I mean," McCain
said.

Lets see....Reagan, Daddy Bush and Clinton all said importing oil from the ME is a national security issue. The rhetoric is tiring. Hopefully he means this.

"The Congressional Record is very clear: I said we went to war in Iraq
because of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Supposedly based on a retired British secret service agent, McCain is going to release the satellite videos and pictures of the trucks going from Iraq to Syria showing that's where the weapons went as his campaign trump card this summer or early fall. According this retired agent that's why the media doesn't harp on no weapons of mass destruction anymore. Supposedly they know it's coming. We'll see, if this is true.

That makes too much sense.

Man...I'd love to see a link to that article........if Bush or a British secret service agent had it, they'd show it.......I also don't know why a British secret service agent would want to give this picture to McCain and not have given it to Blair.......I'd also like to know how a secret service agent got this picture.......so please, let me have a link.

I said supposedly because we'll see if it happens. The guy that said it is supposed to be releasing a book about it. I'll try to find it.

BTW, it wasn't a secret service agent, the guy is supposed to be retired intelligence agent. Sorry.

This is the kind of issue that's really gonna hurt McCain when we get around to the general election campaign. Though people have accused Obama of being short on specifics, McCain is the one who's gonna have to come up with some specifics.

I have the feeling that he will have to spend a great deal of his time "clarifying" his remarks. Just like the current resident of the White House.

My memory is as bad as McCains.......I don't remember him making this many gaffs in the debates.......I would think he's tired, but he's not campaiging as hard as Obama and Clinton........so I don't know.........

I don't know. At some point the media love affair and nice play toward Obama will diminish to a point and he's going to have to answer some tough questions. We'll see if he answers or gives a big giant walk around answer that answers nothing.

They're both going to have to answer some tough questions. While Obama might look prettier and more charismatic on camera he's going to put in some tough situations answering about his policies.

I think Obama has more to clarify than McCain. The issue McCain has is a lot of Americans are just not going to like his stance on Iraq, not clarification issues.

All this is assuming Obama gets the nomination. He hasn't won anything yet.
