just picked up a copy for my 360 yesterday and played it nonstop from 9pm to 2am.. the game's definitely as good as the hype and the stellar ratings. i should've pre-ordered it, especially since i went to 5 different stores before finally finding a place where they weren't sold out. (fortunately, part of living in the city means that the stores are only about 2-3 minutes distance from each other.)

rockstar put in so much content it's almost impossible to comments on all of it. but altogether, the content (from environment, to AI, to inanimate objects, to sound & music, etc.) all come together to create a genuinely immersive atmosphere. analogous to something like elder scrolls, it truly feels like you can do almost anything in gtaIV. i'm still getting a little used to the controls, which is normal with most games imo - and noticed dramatic improvement from 9pm to 2am.. and the story's plot and cut scenes are simply outstanding. very cinematic, strong character development, etc... the addition of the cell phone, while ever-so-subtle, makes a huge difference in immersing you into the gameplay.

i spent my time completing the first 3 missions, going on a couple dates, bowling, playing pool, going to a bar (then drunk driving my date home), a cabaret club, picking fights (with bums, women, drug dealers, white collars, etc.), knifing random people, running people over, demolishing and blowing up cars, running from the cops, getting massacred by the cops, doing some shopping, watching tv... definitely some damn good fun.

I'd buy it if I could afford a 360.

Have you done the classic "kill a cop and barricade yourself in a parking garage with blown up cars, then take out the helicopter"?

Hey Bishop, wondered where you have been.....

I can't wait to get this for the PC.... they are saying between August and October it should be released.

Finally, they aren't being bashful about making games for grown ups.

heh.. not yet. i haven't even gotten a handgun yet - and the cops slaughter my arse when i don't get down like they ask. i have definitely hopped some fences to get away from them. it's pretty nifty how they anticipate the escape path you'll take and try to block you off in advance. the AI is definitely top notch.

yo boss.. i've been around, just not altogether interested in politics lately. the next president is going to be a suckass establishment suit, period. debates about the soap opera of the campaigns is only interesting for a fixed amount of time imo. and, a lame duck president with a lame duck congress.. (and, my bruins lost their playoff run - and the rangers are at risk of being swept. very depressing events.)

anyhow... this definitely isn't the first time an unabashed adult game was made, but it's certainly the most publicized. i have saint's row for my 360 and it's all kinds of controversial - from overt racist dialog (which i found to be awesome taken in its proper context), picking up prostitutes, getting drunk, drive by's, etc... but, when a video game of gta's "genre" comes to market and grosses in what looks to be record sales. not to mention that little timmy isn't the one buying a game that costs $60 on a system that costs some $400 - these are adult consumers.

to toss a hat at consoles and console gamers - a game like gtaIV is undeniably made possible because of the huge success that console gaming has been. consoles have taken gaming much more mainstream than pc's, and as a result, has definitely taken a lot of the wind out of politicians' sails. thus far, we haven't heard any squaking from ol' chickenhead clinton - contrary to her past behavior before the true boom in console gaming (i.e. before consoles were dominated by adult consumers at least as much, if not more than, children consumers). they may not like alcohol and tobacco, but they aren't saying much against those multi-billion dollar industries - gaming looks like it may be joining the club.

my brother's finally come to the realization that he should've gone for the 360 over the wii.. i think it's the combination of his new HDTV and the fact that there are a paltry few games coming out for the wii - and the 360 games are extremely good.
