Why have this "subscription" thing?

I don't understand what the subscription business. Apparently it lists every thread I've even looked at, but I have no idea what it's for. Is there a way to disable it in my user control panel?

Yes. In the User CP, go to "Edit Options" and change the setting in "Default Thread Subscription Mode" to "Do Not Subscribe".
