Have you noticed that new members often register and then make ONE POST before departing forever?

Why should we serve as a soapbox for these often deranged or otherwise challenged "members?"

How about a (very minimal) threshhold before a member is allowed to start a new topic?

Two posts or three should serve as a deterrent to the hit and run loons.

I find it annoying to have a person throw a grenade in our midst and then split forever. Sometimes the grenade is a dud, but why should we even deal with it?

Make 'em earn some level of respect before they can start a topic...

While I agree it may be agravating......but if it gets others here to discuss I don't see what the problem is.

Every forum I've ever been on has a number of one-time posters, and posters who never put anything up. Far as I can see, DF has a fairly reasonable number of posters. Some who don't post very often seem to have unusual and intelligent points of view, even if I don't agree with them. The more variety we have, the better I like it. I get annoyed by some whose views are always predictable and frequently mean-spirited, but I consider DF considerably better than most.

I kinda like it.
Maybe if our responses are intriguing, he/she/it will return to post some more.

We ALL were one post wonders...until the second time.

Some may still be here, lurking and waiting to see what kinds of responses they get, or some may just come back later. Or they just don't like the place. Who knows?

Forums are like beer. Some people take a sip and keep drinking it, and some take that first sip and never touch it again.

Well, thanks for seeing the point I labored to make...not... :blah:

I did not make my first post a new topic...then never return to debate...

It's why I never respond to a "newbie" post unless it's in the intro thread. I wait until I see that they will be here for even a few days before I jump in to any other thread they may start. You should try it sometime, brother.

Hmmm. I dunno. We have gotten many, many new members since I've been here who are terrific posters. I might not agree with them on every single point, but that makes no difference whatsoever.
And I learn a lot. Sometimes I reply, sometimes not....ehhhh, every post and every poster is different.

What are you talking about, Pres? What does this have to do with the topic?
Can you explain what you meant by that, please? I'm lost.

Prolly a one hit wonder.

Maybe so. But that's a bit obscure and it doesn't have a whole lot to do with addressing the issue of new members posting once and taking off, right?

I did not make my first post a new topic...then never return to debate...That wasn't MY point. I was saying that many lurk and come back later too.

I was just saying we all start out with the first one. Sometimes their first post gets a little more "scrutiny" than they would like as well.

Purrs,
PookieI think he was making a joke there. "Tainted Love" was a one hit wonder by Soft Cell. If you think of the "techno" kind of tune that included the words from the Supremes "Where did our love go <Baby Baby>" you may recognize the song.

Does anyone remember the 300 shot wonder who called himself "Red States Rule?" He made over 300 posts in one day, every single one of them surpassingly stupid, and was never heard from again. On the whole, I'd prefer the 1 shot wonder.

lol I kid.Precisely my point!

If they are just here to make a sales call then to hell with them.

Let our members make a couple of posts in someone else's thread BEFORE allowing them to drop their bomb.
