Paper is shut down after report on Vladimir Putin’s love life
Mark Franchetti, Moscow

A NEWSPAPER that defied the Kremlin by reporting that President Vladimir Putin was planning to marry an Olympic gold medal-winning rhythmic gymnast half his age was shut down yesterday.

The closure of Moskovski Korrespondent, whose editor Grigori Nekhoroshev was forced to resign, was a sharp reminder of the perils of invoking Kremlin displeasure.

Rumours of a romance between Putin, 55, and Alina Kabaeva, 24, who is also an MP in his party, have been circulating in Moscow for months, but until last week no one had dared to print them.

The paper admitted there was no factual basis for its claim that Putin had already divorced Ludmilla, 50, his wife of 24 years, and would marry Kabaeva in June, shortly after standing down as president and becoming prime minister. It cited information from a party planner who claimed to be bidding to organise the lavish reception.

Both Putin and Kabaeva denied the report, which was followed up by European newspapers but ignored by Russia’s media, which do not delve into the private lives of politicians.

“I thought we should run the story to help break the taboo,” said Nekhoroshev. He paid a swift penalty for his daring: the paper, owned by Alexander Lebedev, the billionaire tycoon, ceased publication immediately.

Its parent firm blamed “costs” and “conceptual disagreements with the newsroom” but insisted in a statement that “this has nothing to do with politics and is solely a business decision”.

Few in Russia will believe that. The closure came a few hours after Putin had said during a visit to Sardinia that there was not a word of truth in the story and derided the “snotty noses and erotic fantasies” of the journalists concerned. So protective is the president of his private life that the Russian public has not seen his daughters since he came to power eight years ago.

“Our director came to the newsroom and told us we were being shut down,” said Nekhoroshev, who sounded shaken. “As far as the story is concerned I’ve full faith in my correspondents.”

Kabaeva, who is famed for her “extreme natural flexibility”, had threatened to sue. Her high profile as a sporting pin-up has been enhanced by photographs showing her wearing nothing but furs, but she has spoken of her strong political ambitions.

During Putin’s presidency, the Kremlin has brought all the television channels under its control and become highly sensitive to criticism in the press.

Lebedev, who had ordered his editors to stand up the story with some facts or apologise – they apologised – may now come under further pressure. He also owns Novaya Gazeta, a paper fiercely critical of the Kremlin.

“It just goes to show what a terrible state the Russian media is in after eight years of Putin’s regime,” said Oleg Panfilov, an analyst. “It is so cowed that one just needs to bark at it to see it hide under a table.”

At least Putin, who burnished his macho image by posing bare-chested on a fishing trip last year, saw the funny side of his new-found reputation as a ladies’ man. Relishing a question from a friendly reporter about his supposed engagement, he declared that he fancies all Russian women: “It won’t come as a surprise if I say that I like them all, the most talented and beautiful in the world.”

Although Russia is definately becoming more authoritarian, they don't seem to be visibly becoming communist. Their government is closer to fascism than anything else. I don't exactly blame them; this is the inevitable result of Russia's conditions after the Cold War.

The article is from British "Times" which was always anti-Russian publication.

But who cares what they write about Russia anyway? Well, some people in America probably do.

I am not sure if that Russian paper was closed because of what it's reported. Most likely NOT.
But even if it was closed because it said something stupid about Putin than let me ask you - why does the West care about it? Why?

Russia is the BIGGEST COUNTRY IS THE WORLD and it's getting RICHER day by day, and it doesn't give a damn what the rest of the world is busy with or think about Russia.... We don't have to explain ANYTHING TO ANYONE.

Russia is busy making money while the West is busy chasing Muslims. And we all know that the West is not going to win at this game.

We won the Second World War. We protected out land.
Russia is out land, and on our land we can do WHATEVER WE PLEASE. We can close or open any newspapers we want or kick out of Russia any pro-Western freak we don't like.

And there is not a damn country in the world that will dare to stick its runny nose into Russia's internal policies. So if the West doesn't like what we do in Russia than the West can bite its own ass.

OK?

Sure thing, December! You quit caring about what Americans do, when they do it, and how they do it, and we'll quit caring about what Russians do, etc. etc. etc.

You stop reading and posting anti-American articles from anti-American news sources and we'll stop posting anti-Russian articles from anti-Russian news sources.

Keep YOUR runny nose out of OUR business and we'll reciprocate. If Russia doesn't like what we do in America, Russia can bit its own ass.

It's called tit for tat. If you can take it - don't dish it out. OK??????

When did Russia critisize American press or its internal affairs? Like I said - Russia doesn't give a damn what the rest of the world, including America, is busy with.

America wants to spend Billions trying to set up democracy in Iraq or Afghanistan?
OK. Fine....
Knock yourself out in Iraq.
Why do we care?....

Russia didn't send even a single solder to Iraq or Afghanistan. Russia is getting RICH thanks to high oil prizes and using this money to buy strategic companies in Europe, Asia, Middle East and USA.

Again - we don't have to explain anything to anyone and we can do whatever we want ON OUR LAND.

Have some understanding :madlaugh: Russians are very much like Latins when you insult, calumnize, or threaten their mothers. I'm often tempted but was braught up by diplomatic types. You'se guy's are 'da ones building bases at Russias borders and The Russians are telling you if you keep trying to bite off a little more like Israel of off Palestine they will start shooting. Given their history I'd say they were not bluffing. When you're good with god dyin ain't nothin. :madlaugh:

I constantly post about America not caring what anyone thinks? Where did I say that?

Actually it's just the opposite - these days America is trying sooooooo hard to improve its image after it realized that it is hated throughout the world because of its idiotic foreign policies.
You can read all about it in the public forums and hear it from presidential candidates.

So in case with Russia, the situation is quite different - Russia doesn't threaten other countries with bombardment if they don't do what Russia wants them to do. It's America that tells some small countries - Do what we tell you or else.

Russia doesn't owe money to anyone (it even paid off the dept of the Soviet Union) and it doesn't bomb countries left and right. While the whole world is busy fighting some goofy "War On Terror", Russia is minding its own business and making money.... :)

So, that's why I said that Russia doesn't have to explain ANYTHING TO ANYONE.
