It's pretty sacred.
I don't think America will like it.
And I don't agree with GW as a do-or-die cause, like Iwo was...

I'm not real thrilled with it. I think that was rather poor taste.
There are much better ways of getting a point across, and that isn't one of them.

The Iwo image is so pase. They should have used a nuclear blast w/ a green filter. Simple and slightly more original.

I think it is an absurd adulteration of one of the most poingent photographs of our age.
And it still won't legitimize global warming.

Propaganda, Plain and Simple, as well as incredibly offensive!Iwo Jima Veterans Blast Time's 'Special Environmental Issue' Cover
Time editor tells MSNBC 'there needs to be a real effort along the lines of World War II to combat global warming and climate change.'

For only the second time in 85 years, Time magazine abandoned the traditional red border it uses on its cover. The occasion – to push more global warming alarmism.
The cover of the April 21 issue of Time took the famous Iwo Jima photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Marines raising the American flag and replaced the flag with a tree. The cover story by Bryan Walsh calls green “the new red, white and blue.”
Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, told the Business & Media Institute on April 17 that using that photograph for that cause was a “disgrace.”
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Mates said. “Whoever did it is going to hell. That’s a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor.”
Mates also said making the comparison of World War II to global warming was erroneous and disrespectful.
“The second world war we knew was there,” Mates said. “There’s a big discussion. Some say there is global warming, some say there isn’t. And to stick a tree in place of a flag on the Iwo Jima picture is just sacrilegious.”
According to the American Veterans Center (AVC), Mates served in the 3rd Marine Division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, landing on Feb. 24, 1945.
“A few days later, Mates’ eight-man patrol came under heavy assault from Japanese forces,” Tim Holbert, a spokesman for the AVC, said. “During fierce-hand-to-hand combat, Mates watched as his friend and fellow Marine, Jimmy Trimble, was killed in front of his eyes. Mates was severely wounded, and underwent repeated operations for shrapnel removal for over 30 years.”
Lt. John Keith Wells, the leader of the platoon that raised the flags on Mt. Suribachi and co-author of “Give Me Fifty Marines Not Afraid to Die: Iwo Jima” wasn’t impressed with Time’s efforts.
“That global warming is the biggest joke I’ve ever known,” Wells told the Business & Media Institute. “[W]e’ll stick a dadgum tree up somebody’s rear if they want that and think that’s going to cure something.”
Time managing editor Richard Stengel appeared on MSNBC April 17 and said the United States needed to make a major effort to fight climate change, and that the cover’s purpose was to liken global warming to World War II.
“[O]ne of the things we do in the story is we say there needs to be an effort along the lines of preparing for World War II to combat global warming and climate change,” Stengel said. “It seems to me that this is an issue that is very popular with the voters, makes a lot of sense to them and a candidate who can actually bundle it up in some grand way and say, ‘Look, we need a national and international Manhattan Project to solve this problem and my candidacy involves that.’ I don't understand why they don’t do that.”
Holbert, a speaking on behalf of the American Veterans Center, said the editorial decision by Time to use the photograph for the cover trivialized the cause the veterans fought for.
“Global warming may or may not be a significant threat to the United States,” Holbert said. “The Japanese Empire in February of 1945, however, certainly was, and this photo trivializes the most recognizable moment of one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history. War analogies should be used sparingly by political advocates of all bents.”
Stengel also appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on April 17 and had no difficulty admitting the magazine needed to have a “point of view.”
“I think since I’ve been back at the magazine, I have felt that one of the things that’s needed in journalism is that you have to have a point of view about things,” Stengel said. “You can’t always just say ‘on the one hand, on the other’ and you decide. People trust us to make decisions. We’re experts in what we do. So I thought, you know what, if we really feel strongly about something let's just say so.”
Time has been banging the global warming drum for some time now. In April 2007, Time offered 51 ways to “save the planet,” which included more taxes and regulation. http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20080417171532.aspx
TIME is convinced that we are just one more tax hike and Federal regulation away from being able to control the weather and don't have a problem demeaning those who fought to eliminate fascism in our time..
Their arrogance is breathtaking.
This would be funny if MMGW solutions weren't so serious and detrimental to our nation, our rights and way of life

I don't see it as a big deal since the photograph itself was staged. The event did occur, but it occurred earlier in the day. Then later they thought it would make a great picture, so they staged a reenactment of the event with different soldiers.

They really should have tried something new, like firefox said.

What do you want from us? We live in Obama's "little" Amercia. We're supposed to be pissed-off, gun toting, Christians, right? We're not as elevated, according to elite Liberals.

Hmmmm...I didn't realize my comment only applied to conservatives...I though it was directed to "folks in general"
What's wrong with being a pissed off gun toting Christian? If I had a gun I'd be one and be proud of it. I supposed you swallowed the medias suggestion that that was a bad thing to be huh? Can't think for yourself?

I am constantly amused that conservatives find it so easy not to believe in anything they view as remotely threatening to their comfortable lives. All they seem to need is one nasty winter to convince themselves that global warming is a hoax. Or they can get pissed at a magazine cover that uses the Iwo Jima flagraising as a symbol. Such delicate politically correct sentiments make nice targets for us bomb-throwing, gay-loving, crypto-muslim terrorist lovers. Thank you all for not disappinting.:clapper:

Really. I'd say it was ironic, but I wouldn't want to offend any of the delicate emotions of the poor conservatives.

And yet another topic worthy of discussion has been derailed off into the "my group is better/wiser/smarter/more moral than your group" inanity.
I am amused at the inability of folks to discuss anything without degenerating into this morass of truely dumb generalizations about both liberals and conservatives.
Some discussions do center on the differences between groups. This wasn't one of them and it still isn't.
The picture is indicative of what I would say is wrong with those who make such decisions at Time magazine. And it is one more reason that validates a decision I made a long time ago to not bother spending any money on that particular product.

Ok, I'll apologies for taking this off-track. Sorry to lily and potter too.
I do find the front-page a little off, but not as much as some the crap they write about on the inside.

It's not a big deal to me. I don't support Time Magazine with my money anyway.
They are only doing it because the controversy it creates will probably sell more magazines which is why they are in business in anyway.

Is that the cover of a coming issue of TIME? I don't recall having seen it, and I've subscribed for something like 30 years.

Are you talking about the possible controversy created by parodying the Iwo Jima flag raising, or the widespread doubt among conservatives about global warming?

Absolutely. I believe we have a few things that are a bit more important than this image on a magazine cover. I believe this shows how good our lives really are, that we can devote so much energy toward this, non-since. I assure you that people facing starvation, living in war zones, facing genocide, or dealing with death by other means, could care less about a magazine cover.
We are blessed to have such triviality to fret about. On the other hand, there are some real issues that are worth making noise about:
Thousands are dying in Iraq (American and Iraqi).
Science shows that the earth is warming, as evidenced at the poles. We night want to take an honest look at this.
Our President may start another war before he leaves office.
Let’s restore the parts of the U.S. Constitution, lost (or, trashed) under Bush?
People are losing their homes in record numbers.
Energy prices are going through the roof.
The U.S. Dollar is dying a fast death.
Etc…etc…
And some of us are bitching about what (an F-ing magazine cover!)
PLEASE!

Seems these days most of America is looking for ANY excuse to be angry and insulted. Lots of false/contrived indignation out there....
It goes well with the fearmongering.
In fact it could be the new motto of America..
We're the tops at being afraid and indignant....but there are worse countries out there.........:ecstatic:

I hear ya..well, what gets me is the remark about all usa military would be offended..
lmfao and bullsh1t.
Nope.. I can't prove it but i'd bet my last dollar I could find more people in the armed forces to say.. what the fuk would I be upset over a picture for then anyone else finding others to say the opposite..
If someone in the military or not in the military has a problem with freedom of speech and the re drawing of a picture.. then My advice would be to them to either go back to training camp and look for the balls they lost or grow some new ones
