Bardot on trial for allegedly inciting anti-Muslim hatred Wed Apr 16, 8:28 PM ET
PARIS - Brigitte Bardot is back on trial in France, facing charges of fanning discrimination and racial hatred against Muslims.
In a Paris court hearing Tuesday, prosecutors said they are seeking a two-month suspended prison sentence and a $23,900 fine against the former screen siren and animal rights campaigner.
Bardot, 73, was not present for the hearing. A verdict is expected June 3.
A leading French anti-racism group known as MRAP filed suit last year over a letter that Bardot sent to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, and which was published in her foundation's quarterly journal.
In the letter to Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot accused France's Muslim population of destroying France, and complained about the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha.
French anti-racism laws prevent inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds. Bardot has been convicted four times for inciting racial hatred.

Yeah, the Frogs are not too keen on Freedom of Speech.
Should the US invade and occupy France? In order to establish a more perfect Democracy?

Naw, there's no need. The Liberals will destroy the country, then they'll rebuild it in a more conservative fashion.

Naw, there's no need. The Liberals will destroy the country, then they'll rebuild it in a more conservative fashion.LOL! Quite the opposite of what's happening here eh? The conservatives have destroyed our country, now the liberals will have to rebuild it in a more liberal fashion. :clapper:
And you're wrong about the liberty of freedom of speech not being a liberal ideal. It's exactly a liberal ideal. Liberal comes from liberty.
It's actually a conservative ideal to limit free speech. Like Bush does with his free speech zones. As if the USA was not a free speech zone, all over.

Socialism run amok. (Sorry about the redundancy).
This system is heralded as a success and something to be emulated?
Bah.
The French Gov has now even reserved the right to prosecute private industry (if there still is such a thing there) if they depict models which they deem "too thin".
The bill, approved by the lower house of Parliament, faces a Senate vote. If passed, it would take aim at any means of mass communication — including magazines and Web sites — that promote eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia with punishments of up to three years in prison and more than $70,000 in fines. http://biz.yahoo.com/nytimes/080417/1194765755965.html?.v=13

It's funny to hear some conservatives cry about free speech, that is until some Muslim starts talking bad about America and then they say that Muslim should be arrested for inciting a riot. CLASSIC.

Inciting a riot is illegal.
now the liberals will have to rebuild it in a more liberal fashion.
That's scary. Look what the Liberals have done to France.
And you're wrong about the liberty of freedom of speech not being a liberal ideal. It's exactly a liberal ideal. Liberal comes from liberty.
As long as it's the free speech YOU wanna here. How many times have you suggested that Fox News's license be pulled?

Ms. Bardot has compiled quite a record over the last thirty years or so as a vocal supporter of right wing causes. This dustup is just one more.

I just found this comment by Bardot, supposedly she was defending herself against charges of bigotry:
"Apart from my husband - who maybe will cross over one day as well - I am entirely surrounded by homos. For years, they have been my support, my friends, my adopted children, my confidants."

Best defense ever! "I'm not a bigot, I'm surrounded by homos!" :madlaugh:

Was that the word she used? Or was it a word used by the translator? I wasn't aware that she spoke english or used it in interviews. In this case which was cited as a letter to a French Magazine, I would assume it was written in French.
So the quote marks around a statement in english would seem to be improper unless there was some notation as to who translated the letter.

This is what it says:
In the book, she goes on and talks about her homosexual friends, and said today's homosexuals, "jiggle their bottoms, put their little fingers in the air and with their little castrato voices moan about what those ghastly heteros put them through." She says French politicians are, "weather vanes who turn left or right as the fancy takes them... Not even French prostitutes are what they used to be." She says modern art is "shit -- literally as well as figuratively."
In May 2003 the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship between Peoples announced they will sue Bardot. The "Ligue des Droits de l'Homme" (The Human Rights League) announced they were considering similar legal proceedings.[16]
In her defense, Bardot wrote a letter to a French gay magazine, saying, "Apart from my husband - who maybe will cross over one day as well - I am entirely surrounded by homos. For years, they have been my support, my friends, my adopted children, my confidants."[19]
Don't know the full details.

This is what socialism leads to, why our Constitution is being threatened and why some here in America favor such a system.
Unfortunately, if when implemented, their speech will necessarily be restricted as well.
The support for such a system here both baffles and worries me.

Liberalism = slavery. It's disconcerting that the Liberals--of all people--can't see that.

That's rich. I love how some here have said that calling the right fascists is wrong, but then turn around and say liberalism is equal to slavery? That's rich.
Fear mongering is the only thing some conservatives have because they can't even get a conservative candidate for President. That's because conservatism is DYING.
The right claims that the left in this country wants to crminialize speech that disagrees with them. There was another thread where NO CONSERVATIVES have provided ANY proof of it.
If this lady incited a riot, as apdst pointed out, that is illegal. Bad on her.

One would think that that alone would inoculate her from prosecution.
Maybe her Man-Made-GW stance is a bit lackluster!:D

Kind of hard to fit animal rights and indifference to global warming, as climate change harms non human animals more than humans.

So true. Man, they can dish it out, but they sure can't take it. Until Americans stop throwing tantrums and bombing whoever they damn well please whenever it suits them and stop incarcerating people on the flimsiest hearsay they should:
- shut the hell up about Freedom.
