WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday that Republican Sen. John McCain is too old to be president.

Murtha is 75, four years older than McCain. He says they are nearly the same age, and the rigors and stress of running the country is too much for guys their age.

"I've served with seven presidents," Murtha told a union audience. "When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older."

"This one guy running is about as old as me," he said, drawing laughter and applause. "Let me tell you something, it's no old man's job."

If elected, McCain would be the oldest man to become president at age 72. Ronald Reagan became president at age 69, but he served as president for eight years and was just a few weeks shy of his 78th birthday when he left office.

Murtha, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, made the comments while introducing the candidate he has endorsed, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to the AFL-CIO's Building Trades National Legislative Conference.

Clinton referred to Murtha's introduction when she took the stage, saying she was grateful to have his endorsement and agreed with his sentiment that it will be difficult to turn around all the damage of the Bush administration. She didn't mention his comments on McCain's age, and the campaign sought to distance itself from the comments.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said Clinton "considers Senator McCain a friend, and she respects him. But it's not his age she has a problem with, its his ideas for the future."

Earlier this week, McCain was asked about his age and he joked about it, at first feigning sleep.

"Watch me campaign. We keep a heavier schedule. We campaign harder," he said Monday during The Associated Press annual meeting. "People will judge me by my performance. I am confident that my energy, my intellect, my experience, and my judgment is what American people will — hopefully that they will view me as qualified to be president of the United States."

His campaign said Wednesday Murtha's comments were "nonsense attacks."

Of the Democratic candidates, Clinton is 60 and Sen. Barack Obama is 46.

McCain and Murtha are both Vietnam veterans who have worked closely on national security issues. Age hasn't slowed Murtha down. After Democrats took control of the House in the 2006 election, Murtha sought the House majority leader position but was defeated.

McCain's age and the hard miles on him are a real worry, regardless of any ideological differences I may have with him.

His health may be more a concern than his age, given his history with Melanoma. That said, all the more important his selection of the Veep candidate will be now.

"She didn't mention his comments on McCain's age, and the campaign sought to distance itself from the comments."

Such is our "Alice in Wonderland" political arena, where the democrats focus on destroying each others credibility and ignore the real opponents.....

We're going to have another republican president folks, cause after Hillary gets done trashing Obama and destroying his credibility who will vote for him? And we KNOW nobody in their right mind would vote for Hillary :)

BTW...when the hell are we going to get our writing tools back? What kind of low grade web site is this?

Yeah, but Murtha is the one showing signs of dementia.

Of course McCain is too old. He would be the oldest president in our history. Reagan had that title at 68. McCain is already 72. Our country is at too great of a risk right now to take the chance on a old man. We need someone who knows the diff between Al Qaeda and Shia and Sunni. We need someone who can handle the stress and pressure.

Its not really a matter of age, per se. I've met people in their 90's who were healthy, vigorous, and as sharp as any 20 year old. All you have to do is take a look at McCain and its pretty easy to see that he's not one of those people. At the end of long speeches, he looks like he's 150. During question and answer periods, he gives long rambling answers filled with errors that his campaign staff have to explain away later. He doesn't seem to have a clue what his policy is on half the issues, instead referring reporters to ask his advisers.

I wouldn't say there's a specific age past which a person is too old to be president. McCain, however, has clearly passed his 'sell by' date.

My only comment is that as you age you do get very set in your opinions and ideas, and tend to dismiss new ideas and ways that could fix problems....

And while I respect that age can bring wisdom...it will also bring dimentia and senility...and I don't want senility on the red button.

I'm not so sure that age always brings on rigidity. My political views have been shifting leftward during most of my life, and I think it's fair to say that I'm more willing to see changes in our social structures than many others much younger than me. Many of my younger friends here seem to be slavishly dependent on their own dictionary definitions of whatever they oppose, and just dying to return to the 20th century.

On the other hand, I do believe McCain's age constitutes a major problem. It's been shown pretty clearly that people who've had hard lives like his are considerably more likely to enter senility earlier than those who've had less physical stress.

Great! Now the Dems are going to try an alienate the largest, most aggressive voting block there is, the elderly.

Let's make sure when you lose in November, you smash through the margin of error, so we don't have to listen to you wine "selected, not elected" for another 4 years.

Geez! I think people age differently. I've seen people feeble at 60 and spry and sharp at 80. My aunt is 87 and fast on her feet and sharp as a tack. Auntie Ruth for President!
I don't think age is a huge factor. Obama is my age. Is he too young?

The CEO of the company I work for, is 80 yrso. He has more energy than most 50yrso I know.

IMHO, "age" speaks to one's wisdom and knowledge-base. McCain is almost twice Obama's age, and therefore has twice as many life experiences. His
"medal" has been tested as well, when he was a POW. The hardest thing Obama has had to deal with, is the rev Wright issue.
