SANTA ANA, Calif. - The scandal-plagued Orange County Sheriff's Department is investigating whether jail staff used a Taser stun gun on a cat that was found dead on facility grounds.

The investigation comes after a scathing criminal grand jury report last week that found deputies at Theo Lacy Jail sent personal text messages and watched TV while inmates beat a fellow inmate to death.

Sheriff's spokesman John McDonald says a tipster told the department Monday that jail personnel used a Taser on the cat. The animal was later found dead on the jail grounds, between two fences.

I found the information that they sat around sending text messages while inmates beat another inmate to death more compelling than the dead cat. But, maybe I am just strange though.

When the day comes where all we have to be concerned about in our penal system is a dead cat, it will be the day we have finally reformed that system.

Unfortunately the mindset that thinks it's funny to tazer a cat to death is pervasive in our society today....cowardly society that we've become. It's easier to pick on a defenseless creature than the person you really have a beef with. It's easier to attack and destroy a country unable to defend itself than one who is our equal....

I would rather humans continue to focus on torturing and killing each other and leave the animals alone.

If they nail these guards, animal cruelty will be tacked on to the charges, I'm sure.
