Lieberman likens McCain to JFK (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/30/lieberman-likens-mccain-to-jfk/)

Lieberman and McCain recently went on a legislative factfinding trip to the Middle East including a visit to the Western Wall in Israel.[/b]

(CNN) — Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Connecticut, compared presumptive Republican nominee John McCain to a surprising figure on Sunday — Democratic icon John F. Kennedy.

“I'm a Democrat who came to the party in the era of President John F. Kennedy,” Lieberman told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week. ”It's a strange turn of the road when I find among the candidates running this year that the one, in my opinion, closest to the Kennedy legacy, the John F. Kennedy legacy, is John S. McCain.”

The Democrat-turned Independent endorsed McCain in early February, surprising many in the Democratic party. Lieberman, who ran with Al Gore on the Democratic presidential ticket eight years ago, insisted that his views have remained consistent while the Democratic Party changed.

“The Democratic Party today was not the party it was in 2000. It's been effectively taken over by a small group on the left of the party that is protectionist, isolationist and basically… very, very hyperpartisan. So it pains me,” he said.

A staunch supporter of the Iraq war, Lieberman recently traveled to Baghdad with McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina. Though he commended Hillary Clinton for her vote on declaring the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group, he slammed both Democratic presidential candidates on their foreign policy positions.

“The Democratic candidates have spent most of their time attacking the war in Iraq… they've honestly not done anything substantial to advance our cause in Afghanistan or against Al Qaeda.”

oh cry, cry Lieberman... Call yourself an Independant, when we all know you lean neocon.

Is he actually attempting to sway Democrats to vote McCain by invoking the name of JFK????

Seems like it to me.

Lieberman wants the VP slot. He can correct McCain's mis-speaks for him.

Lieberman is the perfect kiss ass sellout for the republican party. But I feel those that are awake in the Republican party, which I agree may not be much, will see he is about liberal policies except for the Iraq War and actually wake up.

Senator Lieberman is entitled to his opinion. I can say that if Senator Lieberman were a candidate for the presidency I would not be wrestling with my conscience over where to cast my vote.

If leiberman is on the republican ticket we'll really have come full circle in 30 years. The republican party - Pro-Union, Interventionist, Big Government.

He sure is, but he is not free from criticism of that opinion.

True enough. And, I will say that I am not in agreement with him on his JFK/McCain comparison. Still, I have more faith in Lieberman's positions that I do the positions of many other politicians - both Dem. & Rep. I see Lieberman as more a straight shooter than the majority of other politicians.

If you consider supporting a war based on false pretenses 'straight shootin'. The fact that it is the american norm now is just sad..

I would say that MCCain is using him for the Independent and those who think Lieberman is still a Democrat votes.......but it seems that the friendship betwen McCain and Lieberman is real. They both also strongly believe in the same things, this war needs to wage on and Israel. I would say that my post above about his wanting to be VP is real, I still think McCain needs a younger man.

The fact that they seem to believe in the same things (WOT aside) is what worries me the most.

Joe is a lib, the only reason the Dems threw him down the stairs was his view on Iraq and Israel. His senate voting record for decades was overwhelmingly liberal.

The McCain camp likes to point to McCain's overall conservative voting record, but if you just look at the last seven years, he has routinly bucked the conservatives.
We're screwed.

I will laugh my ass off if McCain picked Lieberman for a running mate.
