View Full Version : Censorship

Voluntary

Just ban me if your group members cannot have a civil debate against the accusation that they made.

Voluntary, you made a personal attack on lily:

Quote:
"Why you continue to be a feminine dumbass is beyond me."

Was it the word ' feminine' or 'dumbass'? Was it the combination of both?

I am still confused about my infraction like I am confused about censorship. Cannot I not use the word "dumbass" or "feminine"?

You have failed to tell me what I did wrong besides making a personal attack. What sort of language should I refrain from; 'dumbass' or 'feminine'?.

Tell me how I am not being civil?

Alonzo

Voluntary, do you understand that calling someone a dumbass is a personal attack?

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 03:47 AM
Did I call them a dumbass or their philosophy?

Alonzo
03-30-2008, 03:47 AM
Also, do you understand, as I pointed out to you before, that we have a rule against personal attacks?

Alonzo
03-30-2008, 03:48 AM
How can you claim to be civil and made a personal attack? You're asking what you did wrong besides a personal attack when that is what you did wrong.

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 03:51 AM
You do recognize freedom of speech and civil discourse.

But you do realize the dangers of censorship.

I asked this person to openly discuss her issue with me in a public manner. Was I wrong or uncivil for this request?

Alonzo
03-30-2008, 03:52 AM
So you think calling someone a dumbass is acceptable?

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 03:53 AM
How can you claim to be civil and made a personal attack? You're asking what you did wrong besides a personal attack when that is what you did wrong.

All I am asking is for the accuser to identify my attack and be held responsible.

Is this not a sign a civility?

Alonzo
03-30-2008, 03:55 AM
I am accusing you of making a personal attack by calling another member a dumbass. Now, do you think that comment is acceptable?

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 03:58 AM
So you think calling someone a dumbass is acceptable?

What you are saying is that I cannot call someone a 'dumbass'. But the modifier of a 'feminist' is appropriate.

Fine, I'll stop using 'dumbass'.

Alonzo

I am saying that any personal attack if inappropriate. Dumbass is simply one of many possible personal attacks. Calling someone a terrorist, jackass, dumbass etc. are all personal attacks.

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 04:02 AM
I am accusing you of making a personal attack by calling another member a dumbass. Now, do you think that comment is acceptable?

I do think that calling someone else a dumbass is acceptable. They can either back up their claim or make a dumbass out of me by supporting their claim.

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 04:05 AM
Calling someone a terrorist, jackass, dumbass etc. are all personal attacks.

No, it is not. It is being called sensitive to the English language.

If you call someone a terrorist, then I expect you to support your claim rather than acknowledge a personal attack.

Alonzo
03-30-2008, 04:06 AM
So, in the future, will you respond with similar comments, such as calling people a dumbass, jackass etc. because you find them acceptable?

Voluntary
03-30-2008, 04:16 AM
So, in the future, will you respond with similar comments, such as calling people a dumbass, jackass etc. because you find them acceptable?

If I deem them worthy of asshatery. I will stand behind my accusations like I expect someone to stand behind their accusations.

I also offered the chance for civil discourse numerous times, but you fail to recognize this. Instead of reporting me, lets talk about. I am sorry to be an adult. It is pitiful that this site does not recognize maturity.

Alonzo

Since you say you won't stop using personal attacks I'm putting you on a temporary ban and staff will discuss whether it's permanent.

What got recognized is that you lack the maturity to engage in discussions without calling names. Those are classified as "personal attacks." You were not being an adult. Don't blast everyone else for their maturity when you so obviously have difficulties recognizing the concept.

I hope they let you back in and give you one more chance to show your own maturity. :dizzy:

WTF? Lily's one of the best debaters here. How dare this guy call her that? That was definitely a personal attack. Maybe he'll see the error of his ways and come back with a better attirude.
Purrs,
Pookie

OMG! Look at that misspelling up there! LOL! I was going to edit it, but thought, naaah, we have a new word now!

Mia

'Your argument is dumb' is different than 'you are dumb'. Even better might be 'your argument is without merit', or something along those lines.

However, we do get a bit heated in some matters, and find the need to veer off from TOTALLY civil replies. In that case, criticizing the post and not the poster is still the way to go.

Pookie, I like your new word, lol! This member definitely had an attirude, hee-hee!

Thanks, Mia, it was too funny to correct LOL!
The typo fairy takes over the keyboard sometimes...

Perhaps if Voluntary had just said that he was sorry he personally attack someone and had not spent how many HOURS stomping his feet around the forum screaming about the injustice of 2 measly warning points (which would have been gone in 2 days), he would not have been banned. Let this stand as a clear reminder to everyone that when you have screwed up, it is better to be an adult and admit mistakes than to scream and demand that it is everyone but you messing up.

Amen, Anne. Didn't someone else do that? Wasn't it Truth Detector or KDKDK? Anyway, it was kinda funny watching the tantrum, but really, geez, let it go.
That is unless, some moderator DARES to give me a warning point. I'll raise hell from here to eternity!
ROFL! Just kidding.
Good point, Anne.

Hey, I disagree with some of the stupid reasons I get a warning point, but at least I have the decency to whine and bitch in private. ;)

I'm joking about mine, I asked for it to have some fun.

I have not attacked you. Really, did you learn nothing in your time out. How inane.

Personal attack. I expect an apology.

Then be an adult and apologize.

When did I "scream"?--personal attack. Please apologize, back up your claim, or be be banned.

BE A FUCKING ADULT: BACK UP YOUR CLAIMS.

How unfortunate you haven't obviously learned anything during your timeout.

And still demanding apologies..

What grade was you in again?:ponder:

Voluntary,
Don't you think it's a bit over the top to come back in here after your temporary banning demanding apologies?
Why do you think you were given the temporary ban? It wasn't because we owed you any apologies, okay?
Forum rules have to be followed in order to sustain civil debate. I would suggest that you re-read the forum rules and decide whether or not you can abide by them and follow them the way the rest of us do.

Sorry guys, I was planning on changing his temp to permanent and it slipped my mind. Though that has to be one of the dumbest responses to a temp ban I've ever seen.

Well, yes, it struck me as being pompous, arrogant, and to be honest, ridiculous, senseless, and self-serving.
Can I add NUTS?

i sometimes feel like some of my posts are being deleted, but have no way of knowing if they are - or if i'm just losing my mind...

Osborn F. Enready
04-15-2008, 06:43 PM
It may be both..... ;)

Seriously, I was having several problems with lost posts before the change to the new forum format.... since then I have had none, but it doesn't mean its not happening.

bishop
04-15-2008, 07:26 PM
yeah, i initially thought that it was deleted, but in retrospect couldn't think of a reason why it would be deleted (assuming that a mod wouldn't delete the post out of personal bias). heh, maybe i just need a nap.

Alonzo

Bishop, the policy here is that staff does not delete posts.

bishop

thanks.

i wasn't insinuating that anyone did btw... forums & busy day jobs definitely don't mix.
